Indianapolis Indians News Release

DURHAM, N.C. -- After Durham exploded for 10 runs on 13 hits in a 10-1 victory in game one, starter Brian Burres and closer Jean Machi held the Bulls to just one run on three hits and designated hitter Ryan Doumit blasted a two-run home run to lead the Indianapolis Indians to a 4-1 game two win on Friday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

With the doubleheader split, Indianapolis now sits at 58-56 on the season, while with the win and loss Durham still stands at an International League best 69-42. The split also maintains an even record at 3-3 between the two clubs with each collecting two victories in a series at Victory Field in June.

Big innings were the key in Friday evenings doubleheader as the Bulls used a five-run second and fourth to blow away the Tribe 10-1 in game one, before the Indians broke out in game two with two runs in the first and two in the third to come away with a 4-1 victory.

The top of the Bulls' lineup was one of the keys in the game one offensive explosion as number one and two hitters, CF Desmond Jennings and SS Elliot Johnson, combined to go 4-for-6 with three runs and four RBI.

DH Dioner Navarro began the scoring in game one when he ripped a double to center field to score 2B Joe Dillon and LF Leslie Anderson, who led off the frame with back-to-back base hits. Navarro then trotted home later in the frame on a line drive single by Jennings, before an RBI single by Johnson and double by Ruggiano gave the Bulls a commanding 5-0 lead.

Durham, however, continued to pile on the Tribe as they added five more tallies on the board in the fourth inning. After 3B Angel Chavez led off the fourth with a base hit, Jennings drew a walk to set up Johnson, who cleared the bases with a two-run triple to center.

Johnson then came around to score later in the frame when former Indians' INF Chris Richard lifted a double to left, before Richard came plateward himself on a base hit to center by Anderson. Navarro would cap the Bulls game one scoring when he lined a single of his own to center to plate Dillon and give Durham a insurmountable 10-0 advantage.

Bulls' starter Richard De Los Santos (5.2 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO) earned his 11th victory of the season after allowing just one run on six hits over 5.2 innings of work, while Tribe starter Brad Lincoln (3.1 IP, 9 H, 9 R, 9 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO) suffered the loss to fall to 6-3 on the season after being lit up for nine runs on nine hits in just 3.1 innings of work.

Game two was a whole different story for the Indians' pitching staff as Burres and Machi held down the Bull's offense and got two multi-run innings from the Tribe offense to propel them to 4-1 victory and doubleheader split.

Despite tying a season high with five walks Burres (5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 3 SO) allowed just a single to Chavez and two doubles to Dillon over 5.2 innings of work to earn the victory and improve to 4-4 on the season. After Burres surrendered the only Bulls' run in game two on a RBI double by Dillon, Machi (1.1 IP, 1 SO) came on and shut the door with 1.1 innings of perfect relief out of the Indians' bullpen to earn his team best 15th save of the season.

While the Tribe pitching staff held down the Durham offense, the Indians' offense used the longball to take the advantage. LF Kevin Melillo got game two started on the right foot for the Tribe as he blasted the third pitch of the contest over the center field wall for his seventh home run of the season.

After Melillo's blast, DH Ryan Doumit, who is on a Major League rehabilitation assignment with the Indians, took over the offense for the rest of the contest. The switch hitting slugger began his offensive outburst by lining a double to right one batter after Melillo's home run and eventually scoring later in the frame on another two-bagger by RF John Bowker.

Doumit then gave the Tribe some breathing room, when following a one out third inning single by SS Pedro Ciriaco, he launched a two-run longball to center to give the Indians a 4-0 advantage. The home run was Doumit's first on his current rehab assignment and first in an Indians' uniform since April 25, 2007.

All of Doumit's damage was done off of former Indians' hurler Virgil Vasquez (7.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO), who despite going the distance for the Bulls was pinned with the loss to fall 6-2 on the season.

The Indians now continue their four-game series with the Durham Bulls on Saturday, August 7 at 7:05 p.m. RHP Charlie Morton is the probable starter for the Indians, while LHP Heath Phillips is expected to get the call for the Bulls.

The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley on the call. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m.
