Rapidz stormed by Tornadoes

(OTTAWA, ON) June 6, 2008 - In the first game of their three-game series against the Worcester Tornadoes, the Ottawa Rapidz were defeated 4-2, in front of a crowd of 1,152 at Rapidz Stadium.

Pitching for the Rapidz was Fraser Robinson (0-1) who was credited with the loss. The North Gower, ON native pitched seven innings, allowing four runs, one earned run, six hits, three walks and striking out four. For the Tornadoes, Matt Weagle (4-0) went seven innings, allowing two runs (both earned), six hits, three walks and four strikeouts. John Birtwell earned his second save of the year for Worcester.

The Tornadoes got to the Ottawa pitcher early, scoring three runs in the top of the first. The Tornadoes' Scott Grimes reached base on an error by Ottawa third baseman Juan Infante. Chris Colabello then walked and both base runners were driven home on a one out triple by Francisco Caraballo. Caraballo then scored on a double by Rico Santana to give Worcester a 3-0 lead after one.

Worcester continued their scoring into the second. BJ Weed singled then stole second to put himself into scoring position. Scott Grimes followed with a single to send Weed home. Robinson then picked off Grimes at first with a stellar move to end the second inning, with the Tornadoes in the lead 4-0.

The Rapidz were able to get on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring one run. Singles by Sambu Ndungidi, Jose de los Santos, a fielder's choice by Jared Lemieux and an RBI single by Jereme Milons cut the Tornadoes lead to 4-1.

The Rapidz struck again an inning later, cutting the Worcester lead in half. Ottawa Rapidz player of the week Kyle Geiger lead off the inning with a double, then advanced to third on a groundout. Geiger was driven home on a two-out single by Sambu Ndungidi, who registered his first RBI as a Rapid. The Tornadoes hung on to win by a final score of 4-2.

The Rapidz continue their three-game series against Worcester Saturday, June 7 at 7:05pm. Starting for Worcester will be Eddie Pena (2-0) against Ottawa native Mike Kusiewicz (0-3) for the Rapidz.
