Sussex Skyhawks News Release
AUGUSTA, N.J. - Sussex shortstop Kevin Rios went three-for-four with a triple and a home run to lead the Skyhawks to a 5-4 win over the New Jersey Jackals on Friday night at Skylands Park.
Sussex starter Gary Galvez (2-2) went eight innings, giving up four runs on seven hits, to earn the win for the Skyhawks, who now improve to 7-8. Matt Petrusek pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his fifth save of the season.
New Jersey reliever Brandon Martin (1-1) picked up the loss for the Jackals, who dropped to 7-8 on the season.
Rios led off the bottom of the eighth with a triple into the right-centerfield gap. With one out, designated hitter Walter Young hit a hard ground ball to shortstop that scored Rios with what turned out to be the game-winning run.
Sussex led 1-0 through the first five innings until New Jersey third baseman Chris Kelly jolted a two-run home run over the left field wall in the top of the sixth to give the Jackals their first lead of the game, 2-1.
Rios answered in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run to left to tie the game 2-2. After Jorge Moreno singled to center, Young smacked a run-scoring double down the right field line to give Sussex a 3-2 lead. Jay Yaconetti's single to left scored Young to give Sussex a 4-2 lead going into the seventh.
The Jackals were able to tie it 4-4 in the top of the seventh when they plated two runs on groundouts.
New Jersey starter Ryan Pacyna and Galvez were locked in a pitcher's duel through the first five innings. Chris Brown's RBI-triple in the second inning gave the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead through five.
Pacyna (0-0) went six innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and picked up a no-decision.
The teams return to action at Skylands Park on Saturday at 5:05 p.m. for the second game of a three-game series.
