New Jersey Jackals News Release

Augusta, NJ - Skyhawks designated hitter Walter Young drove in shortstop Kevin Rios on a sacrifice ground out to break a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning as Sussex defeated the New Jersey Jackals 5-4 on Friday night at Skylands Park.

In what was a pitchers duel early, Sussex jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when second baseman Chris Brown tripled home first baseman Matt Weston, who had singled. The Skyhawks led 1-0 until the top of the sixth.

In the sixth, Jackals third baseman Chris Kelly connected for home run of the season, clearing all three rows of billboards in left field to give New Jersey a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Sussex shortstop Kevin Rios tied the game at 2-2 with a one-out home run. Following a base hit by left fielder Jorge Moreno, Young doubled to make it 3-2 Sussex before an RBI single by third baseman Jay Yaconetti gave the Skyhawks a 4-2 lead through six.

In the top of the seventh, the Jackals tied the score at 4-4 on RBI groundouts by catcher Craig Maddox and shortstop Casey Gordon. Skyhawks starter Gary Galvez (2-2) went eight innings to pick up the win. Jackals reliever Brandon Martin (1-1) took the loss after allowing the go-ahead run in the eighth. Matt Petrusek pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his fifth save of the season. The Jackals and Skyhawks continue their three-game series tomorrow evening when Michael Vicaro takes the hill for New Jersey against Kyle Ruwe. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. at Skylands Park in Augusta.
