San Antonio Rampage News Release
SAN ANTONIO (Oct. 17, 2014) - The San Antonio Rampage (2-1-0-0) dropped their first game of the 2014-15 season Friday night, falling to the Utica Comets (2-0-1-0) 3-0 in front of 5,356 at the AT&T Center.
Former Rampage goaltender Jacob Markstrom stopped all 28 shots he faced to earn his fourth shutout in San Antonio, but his first against the Silver and Black.
For the first time this season, the Rampage allowed the opening goal of the game, as Brendan Gaunce converted on a pass from Wacey Hamilton midway through the first period. The Comets took a 2-0 lead in the second period when Alex Biega got free on a break, took a pass from Hunter Shinkaruk and slipped the puck past Ellis at 10:32.
Utica struck again late in the second frame, extending the Comets' lead to three. Carter Bancks received a cross-crease pass from Gaunce and buried it past Ellis, who was coming across to cover the opposite-side pipe.
Dan Ellis, making his second start for the Silver and Black, stopped 21 of the 24 shots he faced. The Rampage were outshot by the Comets 12-8 in the first period but finished with a 28-24 advantage in shots for the game.
KEY STAT
The Rampage were scoreless on four power play opportunities and are now 1-for-14 on the season with the extra man with all 14 opportunities occurring on home ice. San Antonio ranked eighth in the league last season with a 20.8% success rate on the power play at home.
QUOTABLE
"I thought we didn't work, and when you don't work, you get beat. Utica played a very good game, they worked hard every shift and they played harder than we did." - Coach Tom Rowe
