Binghamton, N.Y. - The Pirates (1-1-0-0) embarked on their first road trip of the 2014-2015 season and were handed their first loss in the form of a 3-2 defeat by the Binghamton Senators (1-0-0-1). One of the biggest factors in the decision was the Pirates' inability to convert on the power play, going 1-9 (0.11%) over the course of three periods of play.

Binghamton's Buddy Robinson got things started in the first period with a short-handed goal at 11:20. Shane Prince followed in short order, making the score 2-0, converting with an attacker advantage on a delayed penalty for the Pirates at 15:52.

The Pirates attempted a comeback in the second frame, with Jordan Szwarz netting an unassisted short hander at 3:05. Binghamton fired back at 16:14 of that period, when Aaron Johnson scored immediately after exiting the penalty box having served a minor for interference.

The Pirates picked up a bit of power play redemption in the third period, when rookie Henrik Samuelsson made the most of the man advantage and scored his first professional goal at 6:01, assisted by Dylan Reese and Brendan Shinnimin. The Senators pressured Portland goalie Mike McKenna (1-1-0) for most of the remainder of the period in search of an insurance goal, but the final tally in Binghamton was 3-2.

Portland's power play was lackluster throughout the night, with the team going 1-9 and allowing 1 goal wile having an advantage of a man or more. McKenna finished the night with 37 total saves, allowing 3 goals. Binghamton net minder Andrew Hammond (1-0-1) had 31 saves and allowed 2 goals to pass into the net.

The Pirates return to action tomorrow night when they travel to Hartford, Connecticut tomorrow to take on the Wolf Pack. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
