Indianapolis Indians News Release
ROCHESTER, N.Y. --Left fielder Wilkin Ramirez played the role of hero for the Red Wings on Thursday night, blooping a tenth-inning walkoff single into left-center field to deliver Rochester a 2-1 win over the Indianapolis Indians at Frontier Field.
After the two teams played nine innings to a 1-1 tie, Indianapolis went down in order in the top of the tenth inning, eventually securing a win for Rochester reliever Luis Perdomo. Tossing the final three innings for the Red Wings, Perdomo (3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K) improved to 3-1 on the season while scattering just two hits.
In the bottom of the frame, Indians RHP Tim Wood induced a popout and groundout to record two quick outs, but SS Brian Dozier smacked his ninth double of the season to left field to keep the inning alive. After an intentional walk to 1B Chris Parmelee put runners at first and second, Ramirez deposited his game-winner into shallow left-center and Dozier crossed the plate to end the ballgame.
Wood (1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 K, 1 WP) was saddled with the loss, his sixth of the season, one inning after salvaging the contest by extinguishing a ninth-inning rally by Rochester. Parlemee had nearly ended the game while leading off the ninth, just missing a home run on a double off the wall and Wood was eventually called upon with two on and two out in the frame, issuing a walk before inducing an inning-ending flyout to send the game to extras.
Bonus baseball wasted a spectacular outing by Indians starter Rick VandenHurk. The right-hander tossed eight innings of one-run baseball, scattering seven hits. It was the first time in a string of six starts that VandenHurk (8.0 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K) did not record at least seven strikeouts, but conversely the Eindhoven, Netherlands, native -- who took a no decision and remains 11-4 for the Tribe -- did not allow a walk.
Opposing VandenHurk, Rochester starter Pedro Hernandez was nearly as impressive. In just the sixth Triple-A start of his career, Hernandez (7.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K) held the Indians to just one run while recording five strikeouts.
Indianapolis scored its first pre-ninth-inning run of the series to take an early lead in the second inning. After singles by 1B Jeff Clement and RF Brandon Boggs and a walk by 3B Dallas McPherson loaded the bases with no outs, C Jose Morales lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Clement. The Indians were unable to capitalize further in the inning, however, as a strikeout and a groundout ended the frame.
Rochester tied the game with a lone run in the bottom of the third. 3B Eduardo Escobar led off the frame with a triple to left field and promptly scored on a sac fly by C J.R. Towles, but VandenHurk then induced a flyout and a groundout to end the inning.
Hoping to avoid a series sweep, Indianapolis is expected to send RHP Chris Leroux (2-0, 1.93) to the mound for Friday's 7:05 p.m. game game. The Red Wings, meanwhile, will likely start RHP Liam Hendriks (9-2, 1.99), who was stellar against the Indians on June 9 at Victory Field, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out 10 across 8.2 shutout innings.
The game will be carried on WNDE 1260 AM-WFBQ-HD2, WNDE.com and via iheartradio, a mobile application for iPhone, Blackberry and Android phones with Howard Kellman and Will Flemming on the call. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m.
