August 16, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
Moosic, PA - Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Baseball has been named as one of six finalists for a "Golden Bobblehead" Award presented by Minor League Baseball for "Best Charity Promotion or Event" for the Yankees "Little League Takeover" at Plains Little League's Tokach Field following a break in and arson at the facility.
The award will be presented at Minor League Baseball's Promotional Seminar to be held in Reno, Nevada from October 2nd - 5th at the Atlantis Casino Resort and Spa. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is one of six teams nominated in the "Best Charity Promotion or Event" that also includes another International League team; the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs.
"We are so proud and excited to be a chosen as a finalist for such a prestigious award. It's a huge accomplishment for our entire organization given that we didn't play a single game at 'home' this year," said Katie Beekman, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees Vice President of Marketing. "The opportunity to help the Plains Little League, rally the community and have a little bit of fun is really what the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees and Minor League Baseball are all about."
The Yankees provided Tokach Field with all of the family fun and entertainment as if it were a Scranton/Wilkes-Barre home game. A special edition of "Play Ball!" the Yankees game day program was handed out and a national anthem performer and color guard set the scene for the game which also featured PNC Field P.A. announcer John Davies providing pre-game introductions. The Yankees number one fan CHAMP provided in game entertainment that included: in between innings skits, music, promotions and a hat giveaway.
More than 750 fans attended the event at Tokach Field to support the Plains Little League, making donations to the organization and showing their support. The event raised more than $4,000 to help rebuild the Tokach Field concession stand that was destroyed in the break in and arson.
Formerly known as the "Best of" Awards, the Golden Bobbleheads are exactly what they sound like: bobblehead dolls awash in gold paint. Attendees at the Minor League Baseball Promotion Seminar will vote for the winner in each category after the nominee describes why their promotion of event deserves recognition as the best promotion in the category.
