Rally Falls Short as Eighth Inning Homer Does in Chiefs

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Peoria gave up a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning and left the tying run at second base in the ninth in a 5-4 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels Monday night. The loss sends the Chiefs to 20-25 on the season as Cedar Rapids moves to 20-24 by taking two out of three in the series.

The Chiefs scored first for the third game in a row. With two outs in the second inning Anthony Giansanti doubled down the left field line against Michael Clevinger. Oliver Zapata beat out an infield single to shortstop and Giansanti never stopped running as he scored on the play with a head first slide ahead of the throw home. Zapata went to second on the play and scored for a 2-0 Chiefs lead when Kevin Moesquit misplayed a grounder from Marco Hernandez.

Cedar Rapids came right back in the bottom of the inning against Michael Jensen. Andy Workman was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Gary Mitchell doubled to right to get the Kernels on the board. Abel Baker tied the game 2-2 with a single to right before Jensen got out of the inning with a double play ball.

The game stayed tied until the eighth. Ryan Jones greeted Larry Suarez with a single to right and he advanced to third on a one-out single by Workman. Mitchell put Cedar Rapids up 5-2 when he crushed a line drive homer over the right-field wall.

The Chiefs did not go quietly in the ninth against Kernels closer Ty Kelley. Zapata led off with a walk and moved to second when Hernandez reached on a second error by Mitchell at first base. Zeke DeVoss singled to left to load the bases and Zapata scored as Taiwan Easterling bounced into a 6-4-3 double play. Rafael Lopez singled home Hernandez to cut the lead to 5-4. Pin-Chieh Chen ran for Lopez at first and moved to second as the tying run on a Paul Hoilman single to left. But Kelley got Wes Darvill to line out to shortstop to end the game with the Kernels taking the series.

Jensen allowed two runs on three hits over 5 1/3 innings in the no-decision. He walked three, hit three and struck out four. Liria went 1 2/3 shutout innings and allowed one hit with one walk and one strikeout. Suarez (0-1) allowed three runs on three this and a walk with two strikeouts in one inning of work.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Oliver Zapata (RF) - Zapata reached base four times Monday with a single and three walks. He drove home a run in the second inning and scored twice while also stealing two bases.
