Burlington Bees News Release
BURLINGTON, Iowa (5/21/12) - The Burlington Bees (20-24) briefly enjoyed a small lead, but eventually lost 4-to-2 to the Beloit Snappers (27-18). The Bees fell one game short of sweeping the Snappers who came into the series in first place in the Midwest League West.
Coming into the game, the Bees had scored 21 times in the first two games against Beloit. In Sunday's blowout, the Bees had all nine batters contribute to a 12-to-0 win. All nine batters had either an RBI or scored a run and all nine reached base at least once. The middle of the lineup hit a combined .524 and had seven runs and seven RBIs. But Monday night's game was a different story entirely and the two teams combined for six runs.
The Bees looked in good shape through the first three innings. They hadn't scored, but at least had a couple of hits and threatened early in the game. Left-hander Brent Powers made his third start of the season and despite being 0-1 with an ERA north of eight when starting games this year, Powers looked effective in the first four innings.
The Bees scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth after B.A. Vollmuth led off with his team-leading tenth double of the year. Vollmuth eventually advanced to third on a ground out and with two outs and a man in prime scoring position, Bobby Crocker bounced a base hit into right field to score the first run of the game.
Both Crocker and Eliezer Mesa came into the game hitting well over .300 in their last five games and continued to produce for the Bees in game three. Mesa followed Crocker's single and stolen base with a base hit to left that allowed Crocker to score. Mesa came into the game hitting .500 with three runs scored and three RBIs against Beloit in two games. The Bees led 2-to-0 after four innings.
Both players finished the game with two hits in four at bats, but their contribution wasn't enough. Powers faced trouble in the fifth inning and never reclaimed his touch. The first five batters in Beloit's half of the fifth reached base. The first four eventually scored in the inning. The big blows came from Matt Coach and Adam Pettersen who both hit two-run singles with the bases loaded. Drew Tyson relieved Powers and struck out slugger Miguel Sano to avoid an even bigger inning. Powers (3-3) earned his second loss in a start and pitched 4.2 innings and gave up four earned runs.
The Bees have a day off on Tuesday and head to Kane County on Wednesday to start a three-game series. For information on Bees baseball, call (319) 754-5705 or visit www.gobees.com.
