Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, Iowa - Trying for their first sweep of an opponent this year, the Clinton LumberKings fell short as they dropped the series finale against the Quad Cities River Bandits, 10-6 at Ashford University Field on Monday night.

For the second day in a row the LumberKings fell behind, but rallied to take the lead. After the River Bandits scored three times in the top of the third, Clinton came back with four in the bottom half. This time it was Dan Paolini delivering a clutch two-out, two-run double to give Clinton a 4-3 lead.

Brett Shankin worked a career-high six innings tonight and also registered a career-best nine strikeouts. It stayed 4-3 until the top of the seventh inning when Quad Cities exploded for six runs off relievers Ben Cornwell and John Taylor. Clinton tacked on single tallies in the seventh and eighth inning on solo home runs from Janelfry Zorrilla and Jabari Blash. It was the first of the year for Zorrilla who was appearing in his first game as a LumberKing. Blash's home run was his team-leading eighth of the year.

Cornwell was saddled with the loss, his first of the year. Robert Stock picked up the win in relief as he worked two innings. The two rivals will not meet again until early July. Clinton has an off day tomorrow and is back at it as they embark on a seven-game road trip. They visit the Peoria Chiefs on Wednesday night as right-hander Trevor Miller (1-3, 4.14) works against right-hander Jose Rosario (3-4, 4.37). First pitch from Peoria is scheduled for 6:30 PM.
