Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers turned in a ninth-inning come-from-behind performance to top the Salt Lake Bees 8-7 in front of 6,091 fans at Cheney Stadium on Friday.
Tacoma, trailing the Bees 7-6, tied the score thanks to Alex Liddi's second home run of the night, a solo blast that led off the bottom of the inning. With Mike Carp on second base and two outs, catcher Jose Yepez drove in the go-ahead run with a single up the middle that put Tacoma on top for good.
It was Carp who gave the Rainiers an initial 3-0 advantage after blasting his team-leading 21st home run of the season, a three-run shot, with Ryan Langerhans and Liddi aboard.
The lead lasted until the top of the third after a four-run outburst paved the way to a 4-3 Salt Lake edge. A passed ball scored outfielder Tyler Auer from third for the first run and Paul McAnulty drove in another with an RBI single. Jeff Baisley grounded into a force out that plated one more and then the Bees pulled ahead on a double from Gil Velazquez two batters later.
The Rainiers tied the game at 4-4 after drawing a bases-loaded walk in the fourth before Salt Lake answered with three runs in the sixth. The inning started with Auer's sacrifice fly that drove in Velazquez and ended with Reggie Willits scoring on reliever Josh Fields' balk and Salt Lake holding a 7-4 lead.
Liddi hit a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to put Tacoma within a run.
Reliever Scott Patterson (3-1) earned the win for the Rainiers after striking out the side in the ninth. Kevin Jepsen was dealt the loss, surrendering both of Tacoma runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning.
The Rainiers (46-47) take the field for the third game of the club's four-game series with the Bees at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday night. Left-hander Luke French (5-6, 5.90) is scheduled to get the nod for Tacoma against Salt Lake right-hander Eric Junge (5-6, 5.27). The game will be broadcast live on South Sound Sports 850-AM and can be streamed online at www.tacomarainiers.com.
