First-place Reno earns 6-3 win over Colorado Springs

RENO, Nev.- Zach Kroenke tossed six strong innings, and David Winfree homered and drove in a pair of runs, leading first-place Reno to a 6-3 win over Colorado Springs Friday night at Aces Ballpark.

After staking the Sky Sox to an early 1-0 lead, the Aces put up five runs over the fourth and fifth frames to take control. Winfree tied the game with a solo shot leading off the fourth before Konrad Schmidt doubled home a pair of runs, extending the lead to 3-1.

Reno tacked on two more in the fifth on a Winfree RBI double and an Andy Tracy sacrifice fly, giving the Aces a 5-1 lead they would not relinquish. Kroenke (6-1) and the Aces bullpen held on from there, giving Reno its fourth-straight win and sixth in its last eight games.

Kroenke surrendered just two runs on six hits in six innings of work, striking out four and walking one. After Daniel Stange, Esmerling Vasquez and Jordan Norberto registered holds, Bryan Shaw shut the door in the ninth for his eighth save in eight opportunities this season for Reno and second in as many nights.

The loss went to Colorado Springs starter Greg Reynolds (5-3), who surrendered five earned runs over six innings, striking out two and walking a pair.

Winfree finished two-for-four with a double, home run and two runs batted in for the Aces. Schmidt had a pair of hits and two RBIs, while Mark Hallberg recorded his second-straight multi-hit effort, going two-for-three.

Reno and Colorado Springs square off again Saturday night, with Aces RHP Gaby Hernandez (2-2, 7.33 ERA) set to take the ball against RHP Esmil Rogers (0-1, 6.00 ERA), pitching for Sky Sox on a Major League rehabilitation assignment. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. PT, and is the conclusion of Johnny Cash Weekend, with the Aces wearing special black jerseys to be auctioned off for charity after the game.
