Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers (38-51) defeated the Oklahoma City Dodgers (52-38) 6-3 in front of 6,504 fans on Sunday afternoon at Cheney Stadium in the final game before the All-Star Break. The Rainiers were aided by sloppy pitching by the Dodgers, with five of their runs scored by batters who reached base on a walk or hit by pitch.
Oklahoma City started the scoring in the second. James Outman led off the frame by drawing a walk off Tacoma RHP Konner Wade, and two batters later, scored on a double by designated hitter Hunter Fedducia. With two out, Tony Wolters doubled down the left field line, driving in Fedducia. Drew Avans followed with an RBI single to left, giving the Dodgers a 3-0 lead. Wade was perfect after this, retiring the next 16 batters he faced. In seven innings (a season high), the righty allowed three runs on three hits while striking out seven, good for his second quality start of the season.
The Rainiers got a run back in the bottom of the second. Trey Amburgey (walk) and Scott Heineman (single) reached to start off the frame, setting the stage for Mason McCoy. The shortstop delivered, lacing a ball through the five hole to score Amburgey from second.
RHP Dellin Betances, an Oklahoma City reliever who has been wild all year, let the Rainiers surge back in the fifth. After loading the bases with none out (walk, hit by pitch, walk), Betances gave up back-to-back walks to Marcus Wilson and Joe Odom, pushing across two runs. With one out, the Dodgers replaced Betances with RHP Justin Hagenman, hoping to keep the game tied at three. Instead, Amburgey lined a single to left, driving in two and giving Tacoma a 5-3 lead. In all, the Rainiers scored four runs on just one hit in the fifth inning.
Tacoma manufactured another run in the sixth. After reaching on a fielder's choice, Forrest Wall stole second, then advanced to third on a wild pitch by RHP Bobby Wahl. With one out, Wall scored on a groundout by Kyle Lewis, increasing the Rainiers' lead to three.
LHP Danny Young and RHP Matt Koch slammed the door in the eighth and ninth innings for Tacoma, preserving the 6-3 advantage and securing a series split against Oklahoma City.
The Rainiers are off until Friday, when they start a three game series against the Salt Lake Bees. First pitch on 7/22 at Smith's Ballpark is scheduled for 5:35 p.m. PST and the pitching matchup is to be determined.
