Today's Game: The Oklahoma City Dodgers close out their six-game road series against the Tacoma Rainiers at 3:35 p.m. CT at Cheney Stadium seeking a series win as they lead the series, 3-2. Today is the Dodgers' final game before the Pacific Coast League All-Star Break Monday-Thursday.
Last Game: The Oklahoma City Dodgers used several early clutch hits to build up to a six-run lead on the way to an 8-4 win over the Tacoma Rainiers Saturday night at Cheney Stadium. Jason Martin and James Outman each provided RBI singles in the first inning to give the Dodgers a 2-0 lead. Martin came up in the next inning with the bases loaded and two outs and delivered a two-run single to make it 4-0. After Tacoma scored one run in each of the second and third innings, the Dodgers scored three runs in the fourth inning after hitting three doubles, the last of which was a two-run double with two outs by Ryan Noda. Jake Amaya added a RBI single in the seventh inning to give the Dodgers their largest lead at 8-2. The Rainiers scored two runs in the seventh inning but could not get any closer. Carson Fulmer entered the game in the eighth inning with two runners on and one out and retired all five batters he faced, with strikeouts of each of the three batters in the ninth inning.
Today's Probable Pitcher: Mark Washington (0-0) starts for OKC this afternoon in what will be a bullpen day for the Dodgers...This marks Washington's first start since the 2021 season and just his second start since the 2017 season. He last started May 9, 2021 with Double-A Tulsa, pitching 2.0 scoreless innings against Amarillo. Prior to that, Washington made three starts at the Rookie level during his first professional season...In nine appearances with OKC this season, Washington has allowed seven runs and 12 hits over 9.1 innings with four walks and 10 strikeouts in his first career Triple-A action. He most recently pitched July 14 in Tacoma, allowing a season-high four runs and matching his season high with four hits over 1.0 inning. He allowed two walks as well and did not factor into the decision of OKC's 8-5 loss...The 6-7 right-hander was promoted to OKC in late May, and in his first six appearances, did not allow a run and just four hits over 5.2 innings. However, since then he's given up seven runs and nine hits across his last three outings, spanning 3.2 innings...Prior to his promotion, he posted a 3-0 record with four saves and a 1.16 ERA in 15 relief outings for Double-A Tulsa. He recorded 22 strikeouts and held opponents to a .120 batting average. He ranked first among Texas League pitchers with at least 20.0 IP in BAA and second in WHIP (0.81) and ERA...Washington was selected by the Dodgers in the 25th round of the 2017 MLB Draft out of Lehigh University.
Against the Rainiers: 2022: 3-2 2021: N/A All-time: 54-52 At TAC: 22-33 The Dodgers and Rainiers meet for their first of two series of 2022 after last playing each other during the 2019 season. Tuesday's game was the first game between the clubs since Aug. 9, 2019 - a span of 1,069 days...Tacoma was the only Triple-A West foe the Dodgers did not play during the 2021 season. The teams were originally scheduled to play in April 2021, but the games were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Rainiers went on to win the league title...When the teams last met as part of the 2019 schedule, the Dodgers swept a three-game set at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, outscoring the Rainiers, 23-9. Zach McKinstry had a monster series, going 9-for-11 three doubles and three home runs along with 10 RBI...This week the Dodgers are making their first trip to Tacoma since the 2018 season and OKC is 22-33 all-time at Cheney Stadium...OKC is 2-0-3 against the Rainiers in the last five season series and has not lost a series to Tacoma since the 2014 season (0-4 in Tacoma).
Summer Dip: The Dodgers are aiming for a series win heading into the All-Star Break and looking to turn their fortunes around this month. The Dodgers are 5-9 to start July and are tied with El Paso for first place in the PCL East Division after beginning this month with a 6.0-game lead ahead of the Chihuahuas. Until Friday, the Dodgers had owned sole possession of first place in the division standings since June 5...OKC has exceeded the number of losses it had in all of June when they posted an 18-8 record.
J-Mart Special: Jason Martin went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs and a walk Saturday night. He picked up his third straight multi-RBI game and fourth multi-RBI game during the current series. He's also hit safely in each game of the series, going 7-for-22 with two homers and nine RBI...Martin has hit safely in 11 of his 13 games this month, batting .327 (17x52) with six homers, two doubles, 15 runs scored and 15 RBI. His hits, runs and RBI in July lead the Dodgers and he has also reached base in 13 consecutive games to start the month...Martin has eight homers in his last 16 games, nine homers in his last 18 games and he leads OKC with 19 home runs this season. His nine homers since June 25 are most among all Triple-A players and second among all players in the Minors...Martin ranks second in the PCL in RBI (66) and third with 40 extra-base hits and 63 runs scored, tied for third in homers and ranks fourth with 163 total bases. He is fifth in the league with both a .584 SLG and .987 OPS.
Drew Point: Drew Avans led off Saturday night's game with a double and has led off each of the last three games with a hit. He reached base three times last night with two hits and a hit by pitch, extending his current on-base streak to 28 games, which is the longest by an OKC player this year and longest active streak in the PCL. He is one of six PCL players to have an on-base streak of 28 games or longer this season and he owns the longest on-base streak by a Dodgers player since the 2019 season when Gavin Lux reached base in 37 consecutive games...Avans has now hit safely in 24 of his last 28 games and has reached base safely in 42 of his last 43 games. He's also on a season-best eight-game hitting streak, going 13-for-36 (.361)...He also recorded his team-leading 17th stolen base of the season last night and has three steals in the last two games...From the start of the season through May 31 (31 games), Avans batted .235 (20x85) with seven extra-base hits, eight RBI and 15 runs scored. Since June 1 (37 games), Avans is batting .324 (46x142) with 11 doubles, four triples, three homers, 18 RBI and 33 runs scored. He also has 16 walks during the stretch...He leads the league with seven triples this season.
Offensive Remarks: After being held to three runs Friday night, the Dodgers scored eight runs Saturday, marking the fourth time through the first five games of the current series that the Dodgers scored five or more runs and the third time OKC scored at least eight runs in the series. OKC has also scored at least eight runs in each of their last five wins...OKC went 6-for-17 (.353) with runners in scoring position Saturday. It was the third time since May 17 OKC had at least 17 at-bats with runners in scoring position and the second instance of the current series after the Dodgers went 7-for-20 with RISP Tuesday night. The Dodgers scored five of their first seven runs with two outs and went 3-for-6 when there were runners in scoring position with two outs. On the other side, they held Tacoma 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position overall and 0-for-5 when there were two outs...The Dodgers lead all Triple-A teams with 423 walks, while their 563 runs and .367 OBP are second-most and their .461 SLG and .828 OPS are third...OKC's +85 run differential leads the PCL.
Jake's Hot Takes: Jake Amaya went 3-for-4 with a RBI last night, tying for his most hits in a game since joining OKC. He now has four multi-hit games during the current series in Tacoma and is 9-for-18 with three walks against the Rainiers...Amaya has also hit safely in five of his last six games, going 10-for-22 with two doubles, three RBI, three walks and three runs scored...During his Triple-A tenure, Amaya is batting .377 (23x61) with 19 RBI in 17 road games but just .068 (3x44) with one RBI in 12 home games.
Feducciary Duty: Hunter Feduccia picked up a double, walk and scored a run Saturday. He has hit safely in each of his last five games, including his first career multi-homer game and first two Triple-A home runs Tuesday. During his five-game streak, Feduccia is 7-for-19 with four doubles, two homers, three RBI, three walks and eight runs scored.
Nodary Public: Ryan Noda doubled and collected two RBI Saturday as he extended his on-base streak to 13 games - his second on-base streak of the season of at least 13 games this season. During the stretch, Noda is batting .286 (14x49) with three doubles, a triple, two homers, 12 RBI, eight runs scored and six walks. He reached base in 17 consecutive games April 5-24 and is tied for first in the PCL this season with 49 walks.
Thievery Corporation: Last night the Dodgers set a season high with four stolen bases, with one each by Jake Amaya, Drew Avans, Michael Busch and James Outman. They have stolen seven bases over the last two games and have nine stolen bases so far this series - their highest total in a series this season. Prior to Wednesday, the Dodgers' previous nine steals came across their previous 20 games combined. They rank ninth in the league with 60 stolen bases this season.
Back to the Future: Miguel Vargas started for the NL in Saturday's MLB Futures Game at second base and batted fifth. He collected a walk and grounded out in his two plate appearances and scored one run...Vargas has played in 85 of the Dodgers' 89 games this season and Friday and Saturday night were the first games Vargas did not play with OKC since May 29 against Reno at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. He will also miss today's game...Vargas leads the PCL with 100 hits and 73 runs scored and is one of nine players across the Minors with at least 100 hits this season. Vargas' 168 total bases are second-most in PCL, while his 64 RBI are third, his 48 walks and 21 doubles are tied for fourth and his 38 extra-base hits are tied for fifth.
Around the Horn: The Dodgers are 6-2 in games with a chance to win a series, including 3-2 in the finale of a six-game set. Overall, OKC has a 9-7 record in series finales this season and have lost back-to-back finales, as well as three of the last four...Carson Fulmer recorded the final five outs of Saturday night's game and struck out three batters to earn his eighth save. It was Fulmer's eighth consecutive scoreless appearance (9.2 IP) and 12th consecutive appearance without allowing an earned run (14.1 IP)...James Outman finished with two hits Saturday along with a RBI, walk and run scored. He has now hit safely in five of his last six games, going 7-for-23 with two homers and eight RBI...The Dodgers are in the midst of a stretch of 15 straight games against West Division foes (5-6). OKC is 16-16 against the West Division this season.
