Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Las Vegas, NV - The Tacoma Rainiers let a pair of big innings get the best of them in a 11-4 series-opening loss to the Las Vegas 51s in front of 6,442 fans at Cashman Field on Friday.
Holding onto a 4-1 lead, Tacoma watched the 51s take a one-run advantage after surrendering four runs in the fourth inning. First baseman David Cooper tied the game with a bases-clearing three-run double with two outs. In the next at-bat, Adam Loewen drove in Cooper for the go-ahead run with a line drive single to center field.
Las Vegas proceeded to break the game open in the seventh, scoring six runs on six hits to extend their lead over the Rainiers to seven. Loewen, Jason Lane and former Rainier Chris Woodward each hit doubles in consecutive at-bats to account for the first four runs. Danny Perales and Manny Mayorson hit back-to-back RBI-singles to score the final two.
Tacoma held a lead as large as 3-0 after collecting a trio of runs in the top of the third inning. Infielder Dustin Ackley hit his second triple of the season with no outs in the frame, scoring Josh Bard and Sean Kazmar and putting the Rainiers up by a pair of runs. Matt Tuiasosopo added a final run with a single that scored Ackley.
Ackley ended the night going 2-for-5 including the third-inning triple and two RBI. He has now hit safely in each of his last six games with three multi-hit outings. Mike Carp singled in the fifth to extend his hit streak to 12 games, one shy of tying the longest recorded by a Rainier this season.
Tacoma starter Chris Seddon (1-3) was dealt the loss after allowing five runs on nine hits over six innings, while walking one and fanning two. Mike MacDonald turned in a five-inning start to collect the win, allowing four runs on 11 hits over 5.2 innings.
The Rainiers (21-28) return to action at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday to play the second game of the club's four-game road trip at Las Vegas. Right-hander Chaz Roe (0-4, 6.17) is slated to start for the Rainiers against 51s left-hander Brett Cecil (5-1, 5.84). The game will be broadcast live on South Sound Sports 850-AM and streamed online at www.tacomarainiers.com.
