Iowa Cubs News Release

Des Moines, IA - The Chicago Cubs have announced more roster moves that impact the Iowa Cubs pitching staff. On Friday, Justin Berg was optioned to Iowa and Robert Coello was designated for assignment. Today, the Cubs activated Randy Wells to start against the Pittsburgh Pirates and optioned Casey Coleman to Iowa. The Cubs have also promoted RH Alberto Cabrera to Iowa from double-A Tennessee.

Berg was optioned when the Cubs traded double-A RH Ryan Buchter to Atlanta for RH Rodrigo Lopez. The Cubs selected Lopez' contract and called him up to Chicago. This is Berg's third stint with Iowa this season. He has no record and a 3.75 ERA in eight games with Chicago and is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA and one save in seven games with Iowa. Coello was designated to make room for Lopez on the 40-man roster. Coello comes off Iowa's active roster while he goes through the waiver process. If he isn't claimed or traded in the next few days, it is possible he could return to Iowa. Coello is 3-5 with a 7.82 ERA in nine starts for the I-Cubs.

Coleman has 72 hours to report to Iowa after getting optioned today. He will be activated in time to start on Tuesday in Nashville. Coleman is 2-4 with a 7.25 ERA in nine games (eight starts) with Chicago this season. He was 10-7 with a 4.07 ERA in 20 starts with Iowa last year before getting called up to finish the year in the big leagues. Coleman was originally assigned to Iowa's Opening Day roster this season, but was called up to Chicago on April 6 after Wells and Andrew Cashner were placed on the disabled list.

Cabrera is 6-2 with a 5.36 ERA in nine starts with Tennessee this season. The 22-year-old will make his Triple-A debut as the Cubs' starter tomorrow at Round Rock. Cabrera was 7-5 with a 3.28 ERA in 17 games (16 starts) with high-A Daytona to start last season and was 0-4 with a 6.33 ERA in 10 games (nine starts) with Tennessee to finish the year. Chicago added him to their 40-man roster in November.

The Cubs are in Round Rock tonight for game two of a four-game series against the Express. RH Austin Bibens-Dirkx (3-2, 6.31) will start for the Cubs against RH Derek Hankins (5-2, 6.50) for the Express. The game starts at 6:05 p.m. and will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the Safeco On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 5:45.
