Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Tyler Colvin's two-out, tie-breaking RBI single in the top of the ninth propelled the Iowa Cubs to a 6-4 victory over the Round Rock Express in Saturday night's Pacific Coast League action at The Dell Diamond. The Express (29-20) and Cubs (22-27) have each won five games in the season series with the road team winning seven times.
Round Rock led 4-2 entering the eighth, but the Express bullpen could not hold the lead. Bobby Scales led off the eighth with a home run, his second in as many days.
The Cubs then plated three runs on three hits and an error in the ninth. Ty Wright and Scott Moore had consecutive singles to open the ninth, putting runners on the corners. Jonathan Mota tied the game with an RBI fielder's choice. After a ground out and an intentional walk of Scales, Colvin slapped a single into left-center to score Mota and give the Cubs a 5-4 lead. Scales scored on an errant throw from the outfield.
It was Round Rock's third loss in 23 games this season when leading after eight innings; all three wins occurred in the last 10 games.
John Gaub (2-1), who entered the game to start the bottom of the eighth, pitched a perfect ninth for the win; he retired all six batters he faced with one strikeout. Iowa starter Austin Bibens-Dirkx allowed four runs on four hits and a walk with one strikeout over 4.0 innings.
Hamburger (0-2) took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits with two strikeouts over 1.1 innings. Starter Derek Hankins worked 7.0 innings and held the Cubs to a pair of runs on eight hits with no walks and six strikeouts.
Mota snapped a scoreless tie with a two-run single in the second. Meanwhile, Bibens-Dirkx was perfect through the fourth inning before Chad Tracy's leadoff single in the fifth.
The Express took the lead with a four-run sixth. Joey Butler led off with a solo homer, his second of the season. Esteban German worked a one-out walk and stole second ahead of Omar Quintanilla's infield single. Chris Davis then blasted a three-run home run, his eighth in 10 games with the Express and fourth in five games since being optioned back to Round Rock from the Rangers earlier this week. Davis has at least one RBI in each of his 10 games with Round Rock.
Round Rock and Iowa continue their four-game series Sunday with a 1:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at The Dell Diamond. Right-hander Brett Tomko (0-2, 6.35), who was out-righted to Round Rock from the Rangers prior to Friday's game, is scheduled to start for the Express. Right-hander Alberto Cabrera (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will make his first career Triple-A start for the Cubs.
