Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Buffalo, NY) - Monday night's International League game between Pawtucket and Buffalo was suspended by heavy rains in the top of the fourth inning with the PawSox leading 8-3. The game will be resumed Tuesday afternoon at 5:15 pm and played until completion. It will be followed by game two of the series, which will be shortened to a seven-inning contest.
After trailing 3-0 through two innings, the PawSox scored all eight of their runs in the top of the third in which 13 batters came to the plate. Pawtucket picked up seven hits and one walk in the frame, while Buffalo committed three errors during a steady rain and heavy wind. Bisons starter Chad Jenkins was charged with all eight tallies (four earned).
Jackie Bradley, Jr.'s RBI single started the run scoring in the third, then two batters later Travis Shaw lined a two-run double to knot the game at 3. A Bryce Brentz sacrifice fly scored Shaw to put Pawtucket in front, and then Garin Cecchini doubled off the left field fence to put a runner in scoring position.
The rally was then aided significantly by defensive miscues by the Bisons. Luke Montz reached on a throwing error by third-baseman Matt Hague to leave runners on the corners. Quintin Berry then grounded an RBI single to plate Cecchini, and Marrero followed with a run-scoring single to chase Jenkins and make the score 6-3.
Rob Rasmussen relieved Jenkins and was greeted by Sean Coyle's RBI infield single. Bradley, Jr. then reached on Munenori Kawasaki's throwing error that allowed Marrero to score the eighth run. Marrero and Coyle each reached twice in the inning.
Matt Barnes started for Pawtucket and immediately allowed three first inning tallies, highlighted by Hague's two-run triple to right. Barnes then settled down and pitched scoreless ball in the second and third before the rains came.
In the nightcap of Wednesday's doubleheader, PawSox lefty Brian Johnson (1-0, 0.00) is slated to start against Buffalo southpaw Jeff Francis (NR). Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 5:00 pm.
Following the road trip the PawSox return to McCoy Stadium for a season-opening seven-game homestand, beginning with four games against Rochester starting on Thursday, April 16th. Good seats are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com.
