Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
SUNDAY FUNDAY: The RailRiders downed the Syracuse Chiefs 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at PNC Field. The two clubs split the season-opening series and ended the first calendar week of the International League campaign at 2-2.
ON THE CHASE: Right-hander Chase Whitley (1-0) delivered SWB's first win by a starter with five frames of scoreless baseball. He struck out five while allowing just four hits.
CAUGHT IN HIS WEBB: Southpaw Tyler Webb bridged the path to victory with 2.2 scoreless innings for a hold. He gave up a single to the first man he faced, the red-hot Mark Minicozzi, but did not allow a clean baserunner thereafter.
ARE YOU READY TO RUMBELOW?: Former LSU star Nick Rumbelow bolted down the triumph with his first save. He has played a role in each of the team's two triumphs. He got the win on Opening Night.
TYLER TIME: Tyler Austin fell a triple shy of the cycle in his best showing of the young season. The outfielder bashed his first Triple-A homer, and the team's second of 2015, in the second inning. He smashed a two-out, two-strike double to hammer home a run in the fourth and reached on an infield single in the sixth. In his final at-bat, Austin grounded out to shortstop in the eighth inning.
DESIGNATED OUT: Through four games, four different men have served as the RailRiders' DH: Austin, Jonathan Galvez, Ben Gamel and Kyle Roller. They have gone a collective 1-for-15 (.067) in that role.
OUT OF BALANCE: For the first time in the RailRiders era, SWB plays an unbalanced schedule. The International League docket had seen the club face its divisional brothers 16 times (eight home/eight road) and its non-divisional foes eight times (four home/four road). This year proves uneven in an effort to aid travel. The RailRiders and Red Wings will collide 20 times in 2015 with the meetings split evenly by location.
RED WINGING IT: The RailRiders have lost 10 of their last 11 games Rochester's home, Frontier Field. That hurt the team en route to a 5-11 performance against the Red Wings last season. The SWB franchise had not logged a losing season against Rochester since the 2007 unit also went 5-11.
RECYCLING: On Opening Night, Ramon Flores delivered the first cycle in the Yankees era for the franchise. Red Barons legend Jon Zuber turned the trick at Columbus on May 1, 1997. Brennan King matched that feat on July 14, 2006 versus Toledo. King's was a natural cycle. He led off the second inning with a single, delivered an RBI double in the third and belted a bases-loaded triple in the fifth. In the seventh, the then-25-year-old third baseman drilled his ninth homer over the left-field wall to extend the Red Barons' lead to 13-0. It was a two-out grand slam in his final at-bat of the game. He ended the contest with eight RBIs as he fell one shy of Mark Budzinski's team record set in 2004 that still stands today.
OFF THE RAILS: Yesterday's game between Lehigh Valley and Pawtucket went 16 innings and each team ran out of pitching...The victor in the game turned out to be NEPA native and former RailRider, Russ Canzler...Canzler retired the two men he faced in his lone pitching performance with SWB against Norfolk on June 5 of last season...Canzler allowed a run but went a full inning for yesterday's victory, a game he started as the DH...The IronPigs' and Buffalo Bisons' wins on Sunday meant that every IL squad has won at least once in 2015.
