(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -- The Charlotte Knights used a three-run sixth inning and a trio of scoreless outings to shut out their International League South Division rival Durham Bulls 3-0 in the series opener on Monday night at BB&T Ballpark.

RHP Shawn Haviland was impressive in his Knights debut, allowing only two hits and fanning four Bulls over five innings pitched. The Harvard graduate faced off against Durham LHP Scott Diamond, who matched Haviland pitch-for-pitch through five innings, allowing five hits and striking out two, with both hurlers leaving the game in a 0-0 tie.

RHP Eric Johnson (1-0, 0.00) made his 2015 debut in the sixth inning, relieving Haviland and spinning three scoreless innings of two-hit ball himself to earn the win.

RHP CJ Riefenhauser (0-1, 9.00) relieved Diamond to begin the sixth, and the Knights were able to score three runs on four hits in the inning to take the lead.

Jared Mitchell got the offense started with a lead-off triple in the sixth - his second hit of the game - coming in to score on a Tyler Saladino RBI-groundout.

Back-to-back doubles by Carlos Sanchez and Neftali Soto led to the second run of the inning, with Soto later scoring on an Engel Beltre single to give the Knights the three-run advantage.

LHP Eric Surkamp - who officially joined the Knights on Monday - entered the game in the ninth inning and pitched around a hit and a pair of walks to secure the win, the shutout, and his first career save.

The combined shutout was the first for the Knights since July 19, 2014 against the Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders when four Knights pitchers combined to throw a two-hitter.

Charlotte will look to sweep the two-game series against the Bulls on Tuesday night, as RHP Brad Penny (1-0, 4.76) is scheduled to make his second start in a Knights uniform. Penny -- a 14-year Major League veteran -- will face-off against RHP Dylan Floro (1-0, 0.00). Tuesday night's game will feature a BB&T Ballpark Canvas Print Giveaway for the first 3,000 fans, presented by BB&T. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM with gates set to open at 6:00 PM.
