Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The June 15th edition of Wednesday night baseball at Fifth Third Field featured the familiar face of Luis Cessa and the RailRiders hitters, as Toledo dropped their fifth straight game, 7-3.
The Railriders' Luis Cessa, the former Mud Hen who was sent over to the Yankees' organization in the off-season trade that delivered Justin Wilson to the Tigers, had it going early, setting down the first nine Toledo batters in order. Cessa, who picked up his first win in six tries, went five innings while only giving up two hits, no runs, and striking out three. Dustin Molleken, who made his fourth spot start of the season, took the loss while only lasting three innings in which he gave up three hits, five base on balls, two runs, and struck out three.
The RailRiders made it 2-0 in the fourth when Jake Cave blasted a two-run homerun up and out of Fifth Third Field. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre looked poised to tack on more runs in the fourth inning, but Drake Britton, who was summoned out of the Hen pen, wiggled out of a bases loaded jam by getting Aaron Judge to groundout and end the inning.
The Mud Hens got their first hit in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of Dixon Machado, but he saw little time on the base path, as he was cut down trying to stretch his double into a triple.
SWB extended their lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning after a clutch two-out double off the bat of Pete Kozma plated Gary Sanchez, who roped a double to left earlier in the inning.
Preston Guilmet relieved Britton in the sixth inning, and the RailRiders welcomed Guilmet with three consecutive singles off the bats of Eddy Rodriguez, Ben Gamel, and Donovan Solano to make it 4-0. Judge joined the hit party with a first-pitch double to left field making it 5-0, and then a Machado fielding error off of a sharp Sanchez groundball made it 6-0. One batter later, Tyler Austin lofted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Judge, to make it 7-0 in favor of the RailRiders.
Mr. Phil Coke himself, the former Detroit Tiger/Toledo Mud Hen, pitched a perfect sixth inning for the RailRiders, but JaCoby Jones led off the seventh with a triple to the right field corner, which was followed by Steven Moya's 12th home run of the season to make it 7-2. Johnny Barbato was called upon out of the SWB bullpen to get the final out of the seventh and pitch the eighth and ninth innings.
Toledo tacked on more run in the ninth inning, as Casey McGehee led off with a double and eventually came around to score via a Tyler Collins sac fly, making it 7-3, which is how the game ended.
Also out of the Hen pen was Kurt Spomer who cruised through a scoreless seventh, Bobby Parnell who pitched a perfect eighth, and Kyle Ryan who delivered a goose egg in the ninth.
Toledo looks to salvage a win against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in the final game of the four-game series Thursday night, as the first pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
Toledo Tidbits:
North Woes- Toledo dropped to 0-3 against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Wednesday night and 6-17 vs the IL North for the 2016 season. Toledo, who is now 2-6 against the North at home, plays host to SWB for one more game before they take on Rochester for a three-game weekend set.
Familiar Faces Become the Foes- Luis Cessa wasn't a Hen for very long in the 2015 season, but he was around long enough to piece together a useful scouting report. Cessa, who departed the Tigers organization after he was traded to the Yankees for Justin Wilson, has appeared in three games for the Yankees, earned his first win as a RailRider Wednesday night. Phil Coke, the long time Tiger/Hen also made an appearance Wednesday night. Last but not least, Tommy Field, the 2016 Mud Hen will be back in Toledo this weekend with the Rochester Red Wings.
All-Star Game Voting- Triple-A All-Star Game voting is under way and your Toledo Mud Hens need YOUR votes. Send the likes of Steven Moya (leading the IL with 12 home runs), Chad Huffman (leading the IL with 37 RBI), Casey McGehee (5th in the IL with a .315 batting average), and Preston Guilmet (a Hen pen hurler with a stingy 0.88 ERA). All-Star Game voting will remain open until June 26.
