Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Gary, Ind. - Andy Rohleder hit a home run and made a sensational catch in right field and Steve Haake added two doubles to lead the Gary SouthShore RailCats to a 4-2 win over the Joliet JackHammers on Tuesday afternoon before a crowd of 5,688 at U. S. Steel Yard. The win was the RailCats third straight and improved their record to 7-12. Joliet lost for the eighth straight time and fell to 4-13.

RailCats starting pitcher Jason Shelley (2-2), who played for Joliet in 2005, combined with three relievers to scatter seven base hits. Travis Kerber pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his second save in as many days.

Gary took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Haake led off with a double to center. With one out, Haake stole third, the first of five stolen bases in the game for the RailCats. Tanner Townsend followed with a ground out to second base to bring in Haake for the game's first run.

In the fourth, Joliet's Bubba Smith connected on a titanic home run over the left field netting and beyond Dunes Highway. The homer with a man aboard gave Joliet a 2-1 lead.

Rohleder's home run leading off the fourth tied the game, and the RailCats took the lead in the fifth when Brad Vericker walked with one out and scored on a two-out double by Steve Booth.

Gary added an insurance run in the sixth when Eric McNamee walked, stole second, went to third on a ground out, and scored on Jermaine Allensworth's line drive single to center to make it 4-2.

Shelley worked the first six innings, allowing six hits and two runs with two walks and four strikeouts. Steve Edsall replaced Shelley to start the seventh and retired all five batters he faced. Kris Regas got the final out in the eighth. In the ninth, the first batter to face Kerber reached on an error, but he retired the next three including back-to-back strikeouts that ended the game.

Joliet starter Brad Morenko (1-3) suffered the loss, working five innings and allowing seven hits and three runs with four walks and two strikeouts.

The RailCats and JackHammers meet again on Wednesday in the series finale at 7:00 p.m. Jeff Mault (0-1, 3.77) will start for Gary. Joliet is undecided on their starting pitcher.

Prior to Wednesday's game, the 42 schools from the RailCats High School Baseball Challenge will be recognized. Each school's Player of the Game from their April appearance at U. S. Steel Yard will get the opportunity to throw out a ceremonial first pitch. Any student wearing a high school t-shirt, cap, or other attire bearing their school logo will be given a two dollar discount off the price of a reserved seat.

Notes: Haynes made two diving catches in left field for the RailCats while Rohleder made a leaping grab against the right field fence...Allensworth has hit in eight of his last nine games, batting .393 over the stretch...Haake is batting .406 over his last eight games...Edsall has not allowed a run over his last six outings covering eight and two-thirds innings...The RailCats have won four of their last five games, coming from behind in all four wins. They did have a comeback win over the first 14 games of the season...Many observers felt that the home run by Bubba Smith in the fourth inning was one of the longest ever hit at U. S. Steel Yard.
