Schaumburg Flyers News Release

The Flyers dropped the first game of a three game series to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 9-7 in a game lasting four hours and seven minutes, including two rain delays.

The Flyers looked strong early, jumping out 1-0 in the first inning. Geoff McCallum led off the inning with a single up the middle and was able to advance all the way to third base on a passed ball and wild pitch. Rob Watson would then drive him in with a ground out to the shortstop Kory Wayment. The Flyers would add another run in the top of the fifth inning to go up by two runs heading into a rain delay that would keep the Flyers from taking the field for the next 28 minutes.

During the delay the RedHawks must have found their bats, because when they came up to bat in the bottom of the fifth inning they got five runs on four hits. Taking the 5-2 lead.

The Flyers were able to get their first two runners on against reliever Brian Hewitt to lead off the sixth; Hewitt was then pulled and replaced by Josh Gray. Gray would strike out the first two Flyers he faced and then gave up a hit to Josue Lopez, which ended up down the right field line for a two run double, pulling the Flyers within one run, 5-4.

Apparently the RedHawks didn't enjoy how close the Flyers had come during the top half of the inning, so they decided to tack on one run in their half of the sixth and then another in the bottom of the seventh, leading 8-4 heading into the eighth inning.

The Flyers made some noise in the eighth inning when Lopez picked up another big hit, this time coming off reliever Brian Adams. Lopez blasted a three run homer over the right field wall pulling the Flyers back within one. That however is as close as the Flyers would come. Final score being: RedHawks 9, Flyers 7.

These two teams will face off tomorrow at 7:05 for game two of this three game series. The Flyers return to Alexian Field on June 8, when they will take on the Joliet JackHammers for a four game series.
