
Gary beats Joliet 4-2

GARY, IN-The Joliet JackHammers lost the Gary Southshore RailCats 4-2 in a school day contest on Tuesday afternoon at U.S. Steel Yard before 5,688 fans.
The JackHammers gave up one run in the third inning as Brad Morenko was touched up for a run when Steve Haake doubled to start off the inning. Haake stole third base and scored on a groundout by Tanner Townsend to get a 1-0 lead for the RailCats.
Joliet took a 2-1 lead when Bubba Smith a two-run home run off RailCats starter, Jason Shelley. The former JackHammer starting pitcher and current Plainfield resident allowed a leadoff single to Chad Ehrnsberger before Bubba Smith hammered a fastball over the left-field wall for a 2-1 Joliet lead.
The lead did not last long. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Gary scored the tying run when Andy Rohleder hit his third home run of the year when he pulled a Morenko breaking ball over the left-field wall to tie the game at 2-2.
In the fifth inning, Gary pushed another run across home plate. With one out, Brad Vericker walked and scored when Gary catcher Steve Booth hit a fly ball to left-centerfield. Joliet centerfield Mike Goss took a few steps in to try and catch the baseball. He then retreated back and had the baseball bounce off his glove. Vericker scored, as Booth was credited with a double and the lead was 3-2.
Morenko departed after the fifth inning. He finished his start allowing three runs on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Victor Kleine took the ball for the sixth inning and walked the leadoff man Eric McNamee. McNamee stole second base and went to third on a groundout by Nathan Haynes. He scored on a single by Jermaine Allensworth to extend the lead to 4-2.
Joliet falls to 4-13 with the loss. The JackHammers and RailCats finish their three-game series Wednesday night at 7:00. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 on 1340 WJOL.
