Ortiz leads Vipers to 6-1 victory

June 6, 2006 - Northern League (NL)
Calgary Vipers News Release

Vipers' starter Javier Ortiz followed last week's Pitcher of the Week performance with another gem Tuesday night at Foothills Stadium that led the home squad to a 6-1 victory over the Winnipeg Goldeyes.

Ortiz pitched eight innings, giving up just one run on four hits; he walked one and struck out two on 83 pitches. The win improves Ortiz to 2-1 on the year and moves the Vipers to 8-10 on the season.

Calgary gave their pitcher some offensive support in the second inning when they tagged Goldeyes starter David Glick for three runs. Adam Shorsher led off the inning with a single before Brandon Rogers singled and Sam Rosario walked to load the bases.

A Nelson Castro fielder's choice at third base scored Shorsher from third and left runners on first and second for Manabu Kuramochi. Kuramochi came through with a triple down the right field line that plated both Rosario and Castro, giving Ortiz a 3-0 lead to work with. The speedy Vipers' second-baseman was a homerun shy of the cycle in the game.

The three runs were more than enough for Ortiz, as he cruised through the Winnipeg lineup for most of the game. Ortiz only faced 16 batters through the first five innings; a double by Jimmy Hurst was the only blemish.

Calgary built on their lead in the sixth inning when Shorsher picked up a lead off walk and came around to score on an RBI single by Castro.

Glick, who was signed by the Goldeyes earlier in the day, threw six innings for Winnipeg, giving up four runs on ten hits.

The visitors were able to pick up a run in the top of the eighth with back-to-back doubles by Aaron Mendoza and Fehlandt Lentini.

Calgary added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win. RBI doubles by Rosario and Castro in the inning gave the Vipers a 6-1 lead that they would hold onto the rest of the way.

Brad Rogers took over for Ortiz in the ninth and retired the Goldeyes in order to finish off the win.

With the series knotted at one game apiece, Calgary and Winnipeg will meet for an afternoon game on Wednesday at 12:35 PM at Foothills Stadium. Frank James (0-1) will go after his first win of the season. The series will wrap up with another afternoon tilt on Thursday at 1:35 PM.
