Gary, IN- Demond Smith and Kelley Gulledge each drove in three runs, and the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks withstood a late Gary SouthShore RailCats rally to edge the RailCats 6-5 at U. S. Steel Yard.

The RedHawks bunched their hits off RailCats starter Tom MacLane (2-2), stringing together five singles for four third-inning runs and putting together back-to-back extra base hits to key a two-run fifth. Smith drove in runs with a two-run, bases loaded single in the third and an RBI-triple in the fifth inning, the latter hit plating Bryon Jeffcoat, who had laced a leadoff double. Gulledge drove in three runs with a pair of singles, one in each run-scoring inning.

Redhawks starter Mike Peschel (6-0) blanked the RailCats over the first six innings, but tired after yielding a single and a walk to start the seventh. Former RailCats right-hander Brian Houdek relieved, and issued back-to-back walks before yielding a sacrifice fly to Darin Kinsolving. But Houdek retired Hipolito Martinez, who batted 0-for-4 with three strikeouts and left eight runners on the bases in the game, on a first-pitch pop-up to the second baseman.

The RailCats threatened to tie or win the game in the ninth, piecing together three walks, an infield hit, two errors, and a hit batsman to plate three runs, and load the bases with one out. But, after falling behind 2-0 in the count, RedHawks reliever Mel Spivey induced Juan Camacho to hit an infield fly, and then retired Trey Breamon on a ground ball to end the game.

The RailCats stranded 11 runners on base in the game, batting 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position. The loss was the RailCats fifth straight.

The RailCats (8-12 2nd half, 21-47 overall) have now lost 19 consecutive games to the RedHawks (9-10 2nd half, 41-26 overall) over the last three seasons.

The RailCats host Fargo-Moorhead again on Thirsty Thursday at U. S. Steel Yard (7 p.m. first pitch -- $2 Miller and Miller Lite drafts; free RailCats souvenir cup for the first 1,000 adults 21 & older). The game will also be broadcast on the RailCats Radio Network, including WEFM 95.9, WJOB 1230 AM, and www.sportsjuice.com, beginning at 6:45 p.m.
