Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
It doesn't take very many runs to support starter Cory Walters, and the 14 he received Wednesday night were more than enough, as the Canaries opened a four-game series with the first-place St. Paul Saints with a convincing 14-3 victory at the Birdcage.
Walters (7-3) looked sharp for yet another start, mowing down his former team on the way to his team-leading 7th victory, and fifth in a row. He went 8.1 innings before being pulled by pitching coach Tom Waelchlie in order to receive a standing ovation from the 2,688 fans in attendance. For the game he held one of the league's hottest teams to only 3 runs on 7 hits, while striking out four and walking one. Tonight marked the tenth consecutive start that Walters has pitched into the seventh inning.
It was a big 6th inning for the Canaries that broke the game open, as the Birds collected five hits in the 4-run rally. Three consecutive singles by Glenn Davis, Carlos Pagan, and newly acquired Juan Tolentino, started things off for the Birds, and another hit by Warren Gaspar plated two of the trio. Leftfielder Billy Brown then doubled to the alley to clear the bases, giving the Birds a 7-3 lead that wouldn't let go of.
Another rally in the 7th blew the game wide open as the Canaries loaded up the bases and watched a shot from Billy Brown clear them for his 3rd homerun of the year and 1st grandslam. For the night, Brown was 3-for-5 with 6 RBI.
Mike Meyer (5-6) suffered the loss for St. Paul surrendering seven runs on 12 hits in six innings of work.
Sioux Falls looks to build on their performance tomorrow when they send RHP Nathan Bright to the hill to face Cesar Martinez at 7:00pm.
