Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Gary, Ind. - Six hits from the Gary offense and five runs in the first three innings from Sioux City was too much to overcome as the RailCats fell to the Explorers, 5-1, on Saturday night. The Gary offense has now struck out 25 times and are 1-for-24 with runners in scoring position through the first two games of the series following Saturday's defeat.
Sioux City (22-7) took the opening lead of the series for the second consecutive night with a pair of runs in the second. Dexture McCall made it 1-0 with an RBI double down the left field line before Dylan Kelly brought home McCall with an RBI single down the right field line, doubling the X's lead.
The Explorers tacked on three more runs in the third to go up 5-0. Jay Baum extended the Sioux City lead to four with a two-run double down the left field line before Sermo delivered an RBI single to right-center, brining around Baum from second.
Gary (15-12) trimmed the Sioux City lead to 5-1 with their only run in the fourth. A single from Randy Santiesteban to left followed by a hustle-double to right-center from Mitch Glasser gave the 'Cats runners on second and third. Colin Willis then brought in Santiesteban with an RBI groundout to the right side of the infield.
Lars Liguori (1-3) was charged with the loss in his first start against his former team. The southpaw allowed five runs over 6.1 innings on eight hits and a walk, however, struck out two and retired 11 in a row at one point. Brendan Jenkins retired five of the six batters he faced over 1.2 scoreless innings of relief in his professional baseball debut after signing with the RailCats before Saturday's game while Gabe Perez struck out a pair in a perfect top of the ninth.
Justin Vernia (3-1) recorded the win after allowing just one run in seven innings pitched for X's. The 22-year-old yielded five hits, walked none and struck out a career-high nine.
