RailCats Grind out 9-4 Win over Kansas City

Gary, IN - The RailCats (46-31) took the series from Kansas City (32-46) with a 9-4 victory on Wednesday night. With the win, the RailCats finished their six-game homestand with a record of 5-1.

The RailCats got on the board first in the bottom of the second with an unearned run off Kansas City starter Ethan Cole. Ryan Brockett reached on an infield single and moved to second on a throwing error by third baseman Anthony Davis. Nick Liles followed with an RBI single to center to take a 1-0 lead. The T-Bones committed two errors in the inning.

In the fourth, Jairo Perez fouled off six straight pitches against Morgan Coombs before doubling to left to put runners on second and third. Petey Paramore followed with a broken-bat RBI single to center to score Perez and Justin Bass and take a 2-1 Kansas City lead.

The RailCats quickly grabbed the lead back in the bottom of the inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Brian Kolb reached on an error by the first baseman Justin Bass to tie the game at two. Ryan Babineau brought in Nick Liles when he reached on a fielder's choice to earn a 3-2 lead for the home team after four.

Ethan Cole was removed during the bottom of the fourth after 99 pitches. Cole allowed three runs, one earned, on five hits and four walks in three and â..." innings.

Kansas City made sure the RailCats fourth inning lead was brief. Luis Rivera walked to begin the fifth and was bunted to second by Anthony Davis. Kennard Jones followed with a triple into the corner in right field and he scored on Justin Bass' single past a drawn-in infield to make it 4-3 T-Bones.

Later in the inning, Morgan Coombs hit Jairo Perez with a pitch and walked Petey Paramore to load the bases with two out. Coombs was lifted for the recently signed Chuck Fontana who struck out Felix Molina to end the threat.

Coombs allowed four runs on six hits and three walks in four and â..." innings. Morgan struck out one and received a no-decision.

Trailing 4-3, the RailCats grabbed their second consecutive two-run inning in the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded and two out, Mike Massaro singled to left-center to take a 5-4 lead.

Nick Liles added an insurance run in the sixth when the RailCats had the bases loaded. Liles hit a high chopper to the left side of the diamond that neither Felix Molina nor Anthony Davis could make a play on. That scored Christian Vitters; who walked with one out.

The RailCats put the game away with a three-run seventh inning. Christian Vitters singled home Mike Massaro who walked to leadoff the inning then Cristian Guerrero doubled him in with a shot to left-center. Drew Martinez, who entered as a defensive replacement in the seventh, drove Guerrero in with a base hit to left to make it 9-4.

Chuck Fontana, who signed earlier in the day, earned the victory with two innings of scoreless relief of Morgan Coombs.

Josh Hildebrand was charged with the loss, as he allowed a pair of runs in relief of Ethan Cole.

The RailCats will have an off-day on Thursday and begin a six-game road trip to Lincoln and Wichita. The RailCats and Saltdogs begin their three-game set on Friday night, listen live on 89.1 FM The LakeShore and RailCatsBaseball.com.
