Saints Drop Season High Fifth Straight, Lose 2-0 to RedHawks

FARGO, ND (August 7, 2013) - For the second time in three games at Newman Outdoor Field the St. Paul Saints got a complete game from their starting pitcher. Unfortunately, in both those games the Saints lost as they dropped a 2-0 decision to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Wednesday night.

Saints starter Anthony Claggett, who has pitched at least 6.0 innings in 15 of 16 starts, cruised through most of the night. In the second he gave up a one out triple to Keith Brachold, that tipped off the top of centerfielder Jose Hernadnez' glove. Claggett, however, struck out the next two hitters to end the inning.

In the third Claggett gave up a single to Buddy Sosnoskie, but got Todd Jennings to ground into a double play. After a walk to Zach Penprase, former Saints third baseman Ronnie Bourquin deposited a 2-0 pitch over the right field wall, his 11th of the season, for the only runs of the game.

Claggett would allow just two other base runners to reach as far as second the rest of the game, and hurled 8.0 innings allowing two runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out four.

On the other side Taylor Stanton, who has the second best ERA in the league, did not allow a base runner to reach second until the fifth inning. He gave up five singles through the first eight innings and had just one inning in which two runners were on base. In the fifth Hernandez and Dwight Childs had back-to-back one out singles. Dan Kaczrowski then hit a liner to the right of second baseman C.J. Retherford, who reached out to make the grab and doubled up Hernandez at second.

In the ninth Joey Becker led off with a double and Stanton would depart the game. Left-hander Joe Harris came out of the bullpen to face Brad Boyer who grounded out to second. Nathan Kilcrease took over and struck out Ole Sheldon and got pinch hitter Donald Blunt to fly out to end the game. Blunt pinch hit for designated hitter Brandon Tripp who was thrown out in the seventh inning for arguing a strike three call. Stanton went 8.0 shutout innings allowing six hits while striking out eight.

Adam Frost went 0-4 snapping his 12 game hitting streak, one shy of his career high.

The loss is the season high fifth straight for the Saints and a season tying high sixth straight on the road.

The same two teams meet on Thursday night at 7:02 p.m. in the finale of the three game series at Newman Outdoor Field. The Saints are TBA while the RedHawks send RHP Alex Caldera (8-4, 3.70) to the mound. The game can be heard on Club 1220 AM.
