WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (29-26) lost 3-1 in 12 innings to the Gary SouthShore RailCats at Shaw Park on Saturday night.
Tied at 1-1 in the top of the 12th inning, Tillman Pugh hit a two-out, two-run home run to left-centre to give the RailCats their first lead of the series. Elbert Devarie opened the inning with a walk. Goldeyes' reliever Eric Eadington (2-2) struck out the next two batters before Pugh's home run. Eadington took the loss in relief.
Moises Melendez (2-0) closed out the game with a perfect bottom of the 12th. Melendez earned the win, working three scoreless innings.
Starting pitchers Ethan Carnes and Charle Rosario matched zeroes over the first six and a half innings. Carnes stranded seven runners over the first five, escaping a first and second, no out jam in the top of the fifth. Carnes took a no-decision, throwing seven shutout innings. Carnes walked two and struck out a career-high seven batters.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Reggie Abercrombie hit a solo home run to left-centre to break the scoreless tie.
The RailCats (29-26) tied the game in the top of the eighth. Frank Martinez drew a two-out walk and scored on Jeremy Hamilton's double to right-centre.
Rosario also took a no-decision, allowing one earned run on four hits in nine innings. Rosario walked one and struck out 10.
Abercrombie finished with three hits. Robert Tasin pitched two scoreless innings of relief for Winnipeg. The game started one hour and 18 minutes late due to rain.
The series concludes Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. Mikey O'Brien (5-4, 4.57) takes the mound for Winnipeg. The RailCats are to be determined with their starting pitcher.
