Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Calgary, Alberta - Tanner Townsend homered for the third straight day and Jason Colson added three hits including two doubles to lead the Gary SouthShore RailCats to their fourth straight win, a 5-3 decision over the Calgary Vipers on Sunday. The RailCats closed out their six game Canadian road trip with a 4-2 record and improved their overall mark to 31-23 to go eight games over the .500 mark for the first time in franchise history.

Calgary took a 2-0 lead on a two-run double by Carlos Duncan in the first inning. The RailCats got on the board in the third when Scott Samuels walked with the bases loaded to force in a run to make it 2-1.

Steve Haake walked with one out in the fourth and Townsend followed with a two-run home run to left center field, his 9th of the year, to give the RailCats a 3-2 lead. All three of Townsend?s home runs in the series gave the club the lead after they had trailed or were tied prior to the homer.

Townsend's three game home run streak ties a club record and his four home runs this season against Calgary also ties a club record for homers against a single opponent.

Gary added two more runs in the seventh. Ben Risinger doubled to left with one out and Colson walked. Haake followed with a double to the gap in left center that scored Risinger. Colson also scored on the same play when Calgary catcher Adam Shorsher muffed the throw to the plate for an error.

Calgary scored a single run in the ninth against RailCats reliever Derek Lopez to account for the final score of 5-3. Lopez earned his eighth save while starter Jamie Bennett (5-2) earned the victory after tossing the first five innings and allowing six hits, two runs, and striking out a season-high six batters.

Other than Colson and RailCats pitcher Quintin Oldenburg, who will play in the Northern League All-Star Game in Gary on Tuesday, the club will have four days off before returning to action Friday against Lincoln at U. S. Steel Yard.

Notes: Colson went 9 for 14 with two home runs and four doubles in the three game set at Calgary?Townsend has hit in seven straight games?Risinger has hit in all four games since joining the club, going 5 for 16 (.313)?Calgary manager Mike Busch was ejected in the fourth inning after an umpire lost track of the number of outs in the inning and did not make a call on the back end of a potential double play.
