RedHawks beat Winnipeg, takes series

FARGO, N.D. - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 10-3 on Sunday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo. With the win, the RedHawks took the series two-games-to-one and now have a 5-2 record versus the Goldeyes this season. The victory pushed the RedHawks record to 5-1 in the second half and 33-21 overall, while Winnipeg fell to 3-3 in the half and 25-28 on the season.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, the RedHawks sent 11 batters to the plate in an eight-run third inning. Joe Mathis clubbed a three-run home run to start the scoring, while Clyde Williams chipped in a two-run double and Brent Krause clubbed a two-run home run in the inning. Mathis' homer extended his hitting streak to 14 games, which is the longest current streak in the Northern League.

Winnipeg cut the RedHawks lead to 8-3 on a two-run home run by Al Corbeil, but the Fargo-Moorhead answered right back with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Back-to-back doubles by Mathis and Bryon Jeffcoat plated one run, and Jeffcoat came in to score on an RBI single by Richard Austin.

Starting pitcher Todd George (2-5) picked up the victory for the RedHawks. He pitched 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out three batters and did not issue a walk. Winnipeg starter Roger Luque (2-5) took the loss. He allowed ten runs (six earned) on nine hits. He struck out seven batters and walked two.

The RedHawks are off until Friday, July 22 due to the Northern League All-Star Game, which will be played on Tuesday night in Gary, Ind. The RedHawks will open a three-game series on Friday with the St. Paul Saints at Newman Outdoor Field that night.
