Schaumburg Flyers News Release
KANSAS CITY, KS- The Schaumburg Flyers tied a club record by hitting six home runs on Sunday, July 17 in a 17-5 win over the Kansas City T-Bones at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. The Flyers won an early evening game, salvaging one of the three games in K.C. after two tough losses on Friday and Saturday. The club record of six homers was originally set in a home game on August 6, 2000 (Vs. Sioux Falls).
The Flyers are now 3-3 for the second half and 19-35 for the season as they stay in the second half pennant hunt. Kansas City fell to 2-4, 29-23.
The Flyers put up four separate four-run innings on Sunday, setting the tone with four runs in the top of the first off rookie starter Drew Garner (0-1), signed before the game to make his professional debut. Eric Cole hit a two-out, two-run homer, the first of six longballs in the game. Four more runs came home in the second inning as Jarrod Patterson and Justin Hendrickson crushed back-to-back homers off Garner. It was the second set of back-to-back blasts for Schaumburg this season after Hendrickson and Chris Weekly went deep on June 29 in Game 1 of a doubleheader at Calgary. Following the homers, Josue Lopez singled to knock Garner out of the game after just 1.2 innings.
Haunted by a big lead that melted into a loss on Saturday, the Flyers kept their spikes on the gas pedal, scoring four more in the fifth to build a 12-1 lead for starter Anthony Boughner (4-6). The runs in the fifth were charged to relievers J.C. Ortiz and Chad Sosebee (Position Player). Nelson Gord had a two-run single in the inning.
Schaumburg went back to the longball in the eighth, as Hendrickson belted a leadoff homer onto the left field catwalk off Adam Clay, giving him his second two-homer game of the season. The slugger now has 17 homers for the season to enter the All-Star break among the league leaders. Later in the inning, backup catcher Sean Flynn was summoned to pitch as Clay left with an injury and Tim Marks took Flynn deep for his first Flyers home run and his first of the season. The three-run shot into the left field bullpen made it 16-2 at that point.
Kansas City scored three runs in the eighth off reliever Sam Jansen to make it a 16-5 game but Gord led off the ninth with a club record-tying blast. His first home run since June 2004 off yet another position player, Greg Jacobs, made it 17-5.
Boughner battled through seven innings to pick up his first win since June 18. He allowed 11 hits but made pitches when he needed to, giving up just two runs, one on a solo homer by Mike Brown in the fourth inning.
Seven of the nine Flyers hit safely and eight of them scored runs. Gord, Hendrickson, Lopez and Cole banged out three hits apiece. Gord and Marks drove in four runs apiece to lead the RBI column. Ironically, Schaumburg outhit Kansas City by just one, 17-16. The Flyers' run total was a season high. Nate Cotton pitched the ninth inning to close out the game (No Save).
The three-day Northern League All-Star break begins on Monday. The Flyers and T-Bones will renew acquaintances on Thursday, July 21 at Alexian Field. R.J. Swindle is scheduled to pitch for Schaumburg. Tickets are available for the 7:05 PM game. Call (847) 891-BALL.
Four Flyer players along with Manager Andy McCauley and Pitching Coach Brett Gray will represent the Flyers on the South Division roster at Tuesday's All-Star Game in Gary. Matt Bailie will be the starting pitcher along with C Tim Marks and DH Josue Lopez.
There were periodic technical difficulties with Sunday's webcast (flyersbaseball.com) from Kansas City. The Flyers regret the interruptions.
