Canaries double up Saints, 8-4
July 17, 2005 - Northern League (NL)
St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - Jonny Kaplan finished off a big weekend and Edgard Clemente and Robert Wirth homered to lead Sioux Falls past St. Paul, 8-4, Sunday afternoon at Midway Stadium.
Jeremy Frost homered for the Saints, who fell to 3-3 in the second half of the Northern League schedule, 31-22 overall. Chad Ehrnsberger had a single and a walk and extended his consecutive On-Base streak to 37 games in a row, second best in the league this season.
Kaplan, signed by the team prior to the star of the series, went 3-for-4 and finished the weekend with eight hits in 11 at bats. Clemente, nephew of Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente, hit his league-leading 18th home run of the season and Wirth drilled his first professional four-bagger as part of 11-hit attack off three pitchers. Mike Meyer (4-4), who started and went the first six innings, took the loss.
Nick Webb (2-2) went the first 6.1 innings to get the win for the Canaries, who are also 3-3 but 20-33 overall. The Canaries led all the way, jumping to an early 3-0 lead only to see the Saints get single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to make it 3-2. Wirth hit a two-run homer in the sixth and Clemente added his third of the series, a solo shot, in the seventh as Sioux Falls extended their lead to 8-2.
Frost's solo shot in the eighth, his second in as many games, and Justin Hall's RBI single in the ninth whittled the score to the final margin. Matt Montgomery got Ehrnsberger to bounce into a game-ending double play to earn his 12th save of the season.
Although regular season action doesn't start up until Friday, the Saints will be busy this week. Manager George Tsamis, third base coach Jackie Hernandez and seven players will head to Gary, IN as part of the South Division team in the league's All-Star Game Tuesday night.
St. Paul, the defending Northern League champs and first half South Division champs this year, will travel to Fargo-Moorhead, who won the first half North crown, Friday to start a three-game series.
NOTES - Before the game, the team announced that RHP Rich Cartier has been traded to Brockton of the Canadian-American League for a player to be named later. Cartier had a 4-3 won-loss mark and a 6.75 ERA in 11 games, 10 of which he started.
