Joliet JackHammers News Release

Lincoln, NE- The Joliet JackHammers (25-29) had their biggest day this season offensively at the plate on Sunday in a 19-2 hammering of the Lincoln Saltdogs (30-24). On the mound, left-hander Luis Villarreal (4-4) came within one out of his second complete game shutout of the season, but still finished with a great night allowing just two runs. Needless to say, it was a good day to be a JackHammer as Joliet established season highs in just about every offensive category including at bats (55), runs (19), hits (28), RBI (18), doubles (6) and total bases (40).

Josh Loggins also had a record setting day going 5-7 with four doubles. His four doubles tie the league record for doubles in a game, tying the mark set in Kirk Pierce of Schaumburg on June 12, 2003.

Every Joliet hitter had at least one hit, as two JackHammers stood out on this night, Jayson Drobiak and his 5-5 night with three runs scored and three RBI. Josh Loggins was a one man show as well with his four doubles and five RBI to go along with four runs scored.

The JackHammer's twenty-eight hits on the night were two short of tying the league record of thirty, set by Sioux City on August 27, 1995.

Villarreal took a complete game shutout bid into the 9th, but a leadoff double got him in trouble right away. He got the next two outs on ground outs, but then gave up an RBI single, a walk, followed by another RBI single to end his evening. Matt Petrusek struck out Cory Harris to end the game. Luis showed again why he is the one of the most exciting pitchers in the league, as he has shutout quality stuff when he is on his "A" game.

Joliet scored runs in seven of their nine innings, including the last four straight. They also had a least one hit in every inning except for the second, in which they were set down in order.

The biggest inning proved to be the 6th, an inning that featured eleven batters coming to the plate, with the big blow being a bases clearing double from Loggins.

Humberto Cardenas (3-3) got the loss for the Dogs, after three innings of work, allowing five runs on six hits. All in all, Lincoln used six pitchers on the game, with each giving up at least one run.

The JackHammers will have the next four nights off, as the All-Star break spans from July 18-21. Jayson Drobiak and Amad Stephens will represent the team at Gary, home of the 2005 festivities. The All Star Game itself will be on July 19 at 7:35 CST at Gary's U.S. Steel Yard.

Joliet opens up a three game homestead against the Calgary Vipers on Friday July 22. It will be a night of great baseball, followed by a fireworks show.

Loose Gravel: Joliet's second baseman John Lackaff was hit by a pitch in the first inning of Friday night's game. X-rays taken after the contest showed a fracture in the fifth metacarpal, meaning Lackaff will be out 4-6 weeks. The team placed him on the inactive list Saturday.
