GARY, IN- The Gary SouthShore RailCats (38-38) rebounded from a six-game losing skid to win 5-3 over the St. Paul Saints (51-24) on Wednesday afternoon.

The streak-breaking win came against the most dominant pitcher in the league and the team with the best record. Mark Hamburger (11-3) was charged with the loss as the Saints lost just their 24th game of the year.

The RailCats' Taylor Black (5-5) outpitched the former Major Leaguer to earn his first win as a starting pitcher. The Texan went six innings and gave up just one unearned run on six hits. Most importantly, Black did not walk a batter compared to four strikeouts. He retired the last nine batters he faced.

St. Paul got on the board first by capitalizing on the RailCats' defensive miscues. Shortstop Andy DeJesus made consecutive errors to begin the 2nd inning and second baseman Frank Martinez followed with another mistake on a ball that could have been a double play. Black struck out Tony Thomas to end the inning and escape with just allowing one run.

DeJesus followed up his defensive mistakes with big offense in the bottom of the 2nd. EJ Devarie and Jaime Del Valle both reached on singles to set the table for DeJesus with two outs. The Indiana State product looped a Hamburger pitch into shallow center field to score Devarie and tie the game.

The runs kept coming for the Cats in the 3rd. Reggie Wilson and Anthony Cheky recorded base hits to begin the frame. Alex Crosby had the key hit, a RBI single that scored Wilson and moved Cheky to second base. Later, Del Valle hit a ground ball to the right side that scored Cheky on the fielder's choice to make it 3-1.

Gary SouthShore tallied two more runs in the 6th to grow their lead to 5-1. Del Valle started the frame with a single and scored on a DeJesus single. The shortstop eventually ended came around to add the final run of inning on a fielder's choice from Wilson.

The bullpen and defense were shaky, but did enough to hold on for the win. Moises Melendez worked out of a tough spot in the 7th but gave up one score in the 8th. Jorge de Leon notched his fourth save by pitching 1.1 innings and allowing one unearned run on one hit and a walk. Devarie made a diving catch at third base with the bases loaded in the 9th to preserve the win.

The RailCats' 14 hits in the afternoon victory were more than they managed in the first two games of the series combined. Wilson, Cheky, Del Valle and DeJesus had multi-hit games while DeJesus tallied multiple RBI. The team improved to 15-5 in day games.

The RailCats look to carry momentum from the win into a four-game road trip that begins tomorrow night in Fargo. First pitch is at 7:02 and coverage begins at 6:40 on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
