Wichita Wingnuts News Release
FARGO, N.D. - The Wichita Wingnuts managed just four hits and were shutout for the third time this season as they dropped the rubber match of their series with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 1-0 Wednesday night at Newman Outdoor Field.
Starting pitching was the story on both sides early on. The Wingnuts (47-28) picked up a two-out single from T.J. Mittelstaedt in the first, then did not pick up another hit against Jose Almarante (3-1) until a Matt Chavez single in the fifth. The two combined for all four of Wichita's hits, collecting two apiece on the night.
The Fargo (37-38) offense was not any more successful in the early going, as the home team did not pick up their first hit of the evening until the fourth, when some miscommunication in the outfield led to a bloop knock for K.D. Kang.
Kang's fourth inning knock and a bunt single by Brian Humphries were both erased on double plays induced by Wichita starter Todd Kibby (1-3), who turned in one of his best outings since signing with Wichita. The lefty allowed the lone run of the night on either side, a two-out solo shot to Mike Gilmartin in the bottom of the fifth.
Outside of Gilmartin's long ball Kibby was dominant, yielding five hits and striking out six across seven innings, the longest outing of his Wingnuts tenure.
The Wingnuts had a couple of chances late, but stranded a Chavez double in the seventh and were unable to take advantage of a RedHawks error in the eighth.
In the ninth, Mittelstaedt picked up his second hit of the night with a two-out single, but was caught stealing to end the ball game, and end Wichita's streak of eighth straight road series victories.
The Wingnuts continue their road trip Thursday night as they open-up a four-game set with the Winnipeg Goldeyes at Shaw Park. Righty Alex Boshers (9-3, 3.02) will be on the hill for Wichita, while Winnipeg will counter with left-hander Kevin McGovern (5-2, 4.05). First pitch is set for 7:00, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
