Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, IN- The Gary SouthShore RailCats (37-38) only managed four hits and lost 2-1 to the St. Paul Saints (51-23) to fall below .500 for the first time since June 18th.

Dan Johnson's knuckleball baffled the RailCats. The former Major League first baseman started for St. Paul and went 5.2 innings and allowed just one run. He gave up just four his and struck out one batter.

The Saints' bullpen was just as good as their starter, providing 3.1 innings of hitless relief. Johnson earned the win and Ryan Rodebaugh recorded his 22nd save of the season.

Travis McGee pitched well in a spot start for the RailCats. The right-hander lasted four innings and surrendered one run on just one hit. He struck out four batters and walked two in his first start since June 3rd.

The RailCats welcomed back John Kovalik for his fourth stint with the team today. The Ohioan was charged with the loss in his two-inning performance. He allowed one run on two hits and a walk. Lars Liguori and Jorge de Leon combined to throw three innings of scoreless support.

The RailCats grabbed the first lead of the game in the 3rd inning. John Holland was hit by a pitch and reached to start the frame. Jarred Mederos followed with a single and the two runners advanced to second and third on a Cameron Newell sacrifice bunt. Then, Reggie Wilson hit a fielder's choice ground ball that scored Holland to make it 1-0.

The one-run lead held until the 5th. McGee walked Tony Caldwell, the first batter of the inning, and was pulled right afterwards. Kovalik entered and gave up back-to-back singles to Willie Argo and Aaron Gretz to tie the score. The next batter, Breland Almadova, knocked Argo home with a sacrifice fly to give the Saints a 2-1 lead.

Both teams' bullpens settled in after that, with only one hit coming in the last four innings.

The RailCats' losing streak extended to a season-high six games. Despite the skid, Gary SouthShore is just 3.5 games behind the Lincoln Saltdogs for the division lead. The Sioux City X's won tonight, sending the RailCats to third place in the division.

The RailCats try to avoid a winless homestand tomorrow afternoon against the Saints. First pitch is at 1:10 and coverage begins at 12:45 on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
