St. Paul Saints News Release
GARY, IN - For the second consecutive game the St. Paul Saints were stymied by a spot starter for the Gary SouthShore Railcats. Taylor Black was solid for 6.0 innings and the comeback fell short in a 5-3 loss on Wednesday afternoon at U.S. Steel Yard. The loss drops the Saints to 51-24, but they maintain a 6.5 game lead in the North and still have the best record in the American Association.
The difference in the game came early when the Saints loaded the bases in the first, but couldn't score. With one out Brady Burzynski, Tony Thomas and Dan Johnson all singled to load the bases. Bryson Myles popped out and Tony Caldwell's fielder's choice ground out ended the inning.
In the second the Saints once again loaded the bases with one out on three errors by the Railcats infield. Burzynsi singled home Tanner Vavra to make it 1-0, but Alonzo Harris took too big of a turn at second, got caught in a rundown, and Sam Maus tried to score during the rundown, but was thrown out trying to score. Thomas struck out to end the inning. Black went 6.0 innings allowing one unearned run on six hits while striking out four.
Saints starter Mark Hamburger tied his season low for innings pitched lasting just 6.0 innings. In the bottom of the second inning EJ Devarie singled with one out. He moved to second on a single by Jaime Del Valle. With two outs Andy DeJesus, who was 2-27 on the season, dumped a single into center scoring Devarie to tie the game at one.
In the third the Railcats took the lead for good when Reggie Wilson and Anthony Cheky led off with back-to-back singles. With one out Alex Crosby made it 2-1 with an RBI single. After a walk to Devarie loaded the bases Del Valle's groundout to first scored Cheky to make it 3-1.
In the sixth the Railcats tacked on two more when Del Valle led off with a single and moved to second on a groundout. DeJesus came through again with an RBI single to make it 4-1. He finished the game 3-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Cameron Newell singled to right putting runners at the corners with one out. Wilson's grounder to first was fielded by Johnson, but his throw home was off line allowing DeJesus to score making it 5-1. Hamburger went 6.0 innings allowing five runs on 11 hits while walking one and striking out two. He has now lost three straight.
The Saints tried to mount a comeback getting a run back in the eighth when Myles singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a groundout. He scored on a bunt single by Breland Almadova.
In the ninth Burzynski led off by reaching on an error and moved to second on a Thomas single. After a check swing groundout by Johnson put runners at second and third, Myles' sacrifice fly cut the deficit to two. Tony Caldwell was then hit by a pitch to put the tying runs aboard, but Almadova's liner to third was snagged by Devarie on a diving catch to end the game.
The Saints head home for a four game series against the Sioux Falls Canaries on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. at CHS Field. The Saints honor two Saint Paul Hall of Famers, Paul Molitor and Dave Winfield, presented by Killebrew Root Beer. The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network, cable access channels in the Twin Cities, and heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
