Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD - Winnipeg starter Ethan Carnes pitched a career-high 7 2/3 innings to help the Goldeyes (44-29) claim their tenth win in a row with a 4-3 victory over the Sioux Falls Canaries (26-49) on Tuesday night.
The Goldeyes jumped out ahead early, scoring three unanswered runs in the first three innings.
After a scoreless first, Casio Grider led off the second with a base hit. He advanced to second on an error charged to Canaries starter Dylan Thompson, stole third and scored on a Wes Darvill putout. In the third, Josh Romanski advanced to first on a fielder's choice, Grider singled to drive him home, and Darvill followed with a base hit to score Grider from second and make it 3-0 Goldeyes.
Winnipeg went down in order in the top fourth, but the Canaries came out swinging in the home half. Darwin Perez led off with a double and scored on a one-out David Bergin single. J.C. Linares then singled to advance Bergin to second, and B. J. Guinn doubled to send Bergin home. Linares later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 3.
Nether team could break the tie until the seventh. Leadoff man Willie Cabrera advanced on an error, moved to second on a Romanski single and scored when Jacob Rogers put up a one-out base hit to give the Fish a 4-3 lead they never surrendered.
"You've got to take advantage of mistakes from other teams and cash in on that," Goldeyes hitting coach Tom Vaeth said. "We did that tonight. We were able to take advantage of a big error on their part in the seventh."
Carnes (7-1, 3.12) allowed three earned runs on seven hits, struck out a career-high eight and walked eight through 7 2/3 innings for the win. Rob Tasin recorded the final out in the eighth, and Brandon Shimo struck out one in the scoreless ninth for his second save of the season. Sioux Falls reliever Shawn Blackwell gave up a run on three hits in the seventh for the loss.
"Ethan's on a roll," Vaeth said. "He put up zeroes on the board, and it was nice he could go deep and give some (bullpen) guys the night off.
"(Shimo) executed the pitch he needed to make on 3-2. That's how you win ballgames and how you win 10 straight - good fundamental baseball."
The Goldeyes have only two other 10-game win streaks in franchise history - from July 22 to 31 in 2004 and from July 21 to 29 in 2009. The club record for consecutive wins is 11 (set in 2014).
Vaeth, however, said the team is still taking things one game at a time.
"It's not going to get any easier," he noted. "Every game is a new challenge, but the guys come here every day to win. They're not always going to be pretty. There have been some ugly (wins) in this 10-game streak, but you grind it out and find a way to get it done."
The Goldeyes will look to sweep this three-game series Wednesday afternoon at 12:05. Rick Forney will send right-hander Duke von Schamann (6-5, 4.02) to face lefty Joe Bircher (2-6, 2.64).
Tickets for all Goldeyes home games are available at the Shaw Park box office or by calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting ticketmaster.ca . All Goldeyes games are broadcast live on 93.7 CJNU and at cjnu.ca
