June 9, 2006 - Northern League (NL)
Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Kansas City, Kansas-Alex Taylor's two-out single in the top of the 10th inning brought in Andy Rohleder from second with the tie-breaking run as the Gary SouthShore RailCats battled back from a 6-0 deficit to defeat the Kansas City T-Bones 9-8 on Friday night. The win lifted the RailCats into a tie with the T-Bones for second place in the Eastern Division of the Northern League with a record of 8-13. Gary has won five of their last seven games.

Kansas City's Greg Jacobs hit a two-run home run in the first inning and Eddie Pearson added a three-run shot in the third off RailCats starter Willie Glen. Kansas City led 6-0 after three innings.

The RailCats started back in the fifth, scoring three runs to cut the deficit in half. Nathan Haynes connected on a two-run home run, his third of the year, to highlight the inning.

In the sixth, Tanner Townsend, Brad Vericker, and Andy Rohleder delivered three consecutive singles to start the inning. Rohleder's hit brought in Townsend to make it 6-4.

In the seventh, Jermaine Allensworth's two-out double drove in Eric McNamee to make it 6-5, and after a walk to Townsend, Vericker doubled to left to bring in two more runs and give Gary a 7-6 lead.

Haynes created a run in the ninth when he started the inning with an infield single, stole second, went to third on an error, and scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-6.

The T-Bones rallied to tie the game against RailCats reliever Ryan Miller in the bottom of the ninth. Craig Hurba's two-out double drove in Eric Vega from first to make it 8-7, and Brandon Jones lined an 0-2 pitch to right for a base hit as Hurba scored just ahead of the tag to tie the game.

Rohleder lined a single to right with one out in the Gary 10th. After Chris Curry struck out, Rohleder stole second and scored easily on Taylor's single to center to break the tie. Miller pitched a perfect bottom of the inning to close out the RailCats win.

The top of the 10th featured a bizarre moment when Kansas City pitcher Byron Embry walked off the mound toward Taylor in the middle of the next at bat. Both benches emptied but there was no physical contact. After the final out of the inning was recorded, Embry again barked at Taylor as he walked toward the dugout. More yelling and finger pointing followed, but both managers screamed at their players to remain in the dugouts and the situation died down quickly.

The two clubs meet again Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Josh Habel (1-1, 7.04) will start for Gary against Kansas City's Buddy Blair (0-4, 8.15).
