JackHammers Fall In Schaumburg Friday

SCHAUMBURG, IL-The Joliet JackHammers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and could not hold onto it as the JackHammers lost to the Schaumburg Flyers 5-4 on a ninth-inning error at Alexian Field.

Mike Goss led off the first inning for the JackHammers and worked a walk against the Flyers starter Raymond Jenkins. He stole second base and moved into third base on a throwing error by the catcher Ryan Walker. After John Lackaff flew out, Chad Ehrnsberger singled to score Goss and make it a 1-0 lead.

Ehrnsberger went to third base on a single by Bubba Smith, Jayson Drobiak flew out to right field to score Ehrnsberger and make it 2-0 Joliet.

The Flyers scored one run in the third inning on an RBI groundout against the JackHammers starter Marc Sauer, who was signed before the game to replace Todd Ozias in the JackHammers rotation. He allowed a single run in the third inning and two runs in the fifth inning. Schaumburg second baseman Rob Watson hit an RBI double to get the Joliet lead down to 3-2.

The Flyers tied the game at 3-3 when Chris Weekly hit an RBI single off Sauer to finish off the scoring in the sixth inning.

Sauer went six innings and allowed three runs on six hits while walking one and striking out four.

After Derell McCall pitched a scoreless seventh inning, Amad Stephens took the hill in the eighth inning and a run when Eric Cole reached first base on a fielder's choice, stole second base, and scored on a single by Josue Lopez. The Flyers took a 4-3 lead into the ninth inning.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, the JackHammers tied the game at 4-4. Mike Goss singled and went to second base on a groundout by John Lackaff. Chad Ehrnsberger then grounded out to the third. It allowed Mike Goss to move up to third base and scored on a wild pitch by Schaumburg closer Dan Jackson. The run was the first given up by Jackson through 13 appearances.

The JackHammers gave up the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Stephens took the hill and started the inning off by facing Nelson Gord, who hit a ground ball that went off the glove of Greg Stevens at third base. The ball skipped into left centerfield and Gord advanced to second base on the play. Geoff McCallum then hit a weak ground ball that went to the left of home plate in fair territory up the third base line. Joliet catcher Dennis Blackmon picked up the baseball and overthrew Jayson Drobiak at first base. Gord scored from third base with the winning run. Amad Stephens pitched two innings and took the loss falling to 0-2.

The JackHammers continue their series with the Schaumburg Flyers Saturday night at 6:20. Pregame begins at 6:00 on 1340 WJOL.
