Rail Yard Dawgs Game Notes: Rail Yard Dawgs (25-23-4) vs Rivermen (35-12-5)

March 30, 2018 - SPHL (SPHL)
Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs News Release

LAST TIME OUT: The Rail Yard Dawgs scored in the first minute of the opening period and led wire-to-wire as they cruised past the Fayetteville Marksmen, 6-2, Thursday night at the Crown Coliseum. Maxime Guyon paced the Roanoke offense with a hat trick and Matt Zenzola made 26 saves on 28 shots. Roanoke's win was its third in a row.

MAGIC NUMBER - 4: Roanoke's magic number to clinch a spot in the postseason is four. The Rail Yard Dawgs currently have 54 points and ninth-place Birmingham has 49 with four games remaining. This means the highest point total the Bulls can finish the season with is 57. Any combination of four points picked up by the Rail Yard Dawgs or lost by the Bulls would put Roanoke in the playoffs. If the Dawgs win two of their four remaining games, they are in no matter what Birmingham does with its remaining four. Roanoke could clinch a spot this evening with a win and a Birmingham loss in Pensacola.

HATS OFF: Maxime Guyon scored three goals in Thursday's 6-2 win over Fayetteville, giving the Rail Yard Dawgs their first hat trick of the season. It was only the third hat trick in franchise history and the first in over a full calendar year. Roanoke's last hat trick had been scored by Jackson Brewer on March 18, 2017 at home against the Peoria Rivermen.

THE REST OF THE WAY: The Rail Yard Dawgs have four games remaining in their regular season- all of which will take place against the Peoria Rivermen. Roanoke hosts Peoria on Friday and Saturday to finish out its home schedule. The Dawgs will then head to central Illinois next weekend for their final two games. Roanoke and Peoria have played only once so far this season; a 6-1 Dawgs loss in Peoria on December 23.

ON THE OTHER SIDE: Peoria enters the weekend with a nine point lead on the Pensacola Ice Flyers for the best record in the league and can clinch the top postseason seed with a win. The Rivermen have the league's highest scoring offense at 3.8 goals per game and the second best defense at 2.8 goals against per game.

FRIENDS NO MORE: Roanoke head coach Dan Bremner played the final three seasons of his pro career for Peoria and served as the Rivermen captain for the last two. He was teammates with six current Rivermen skaters and played all three seasons under Peoria head coach Jean-Guy Trudel.

POINTS IN BUNCHES: Four Rail Yard Dawgs put up multi-point games in Thursday's 6-2 win over Fayetteville, highlighted by Maxime Guyon's hat trick and David Gandara's goal and two assists. Gandara set a new career high with three points in the game.

UP NEXT: The Rail Yard Dawgs will play their final home game of the regular season on Saturday night against Peoria. Puck drop at Berglund Center is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
