Raiders Rocket up to Third in Kia CHL Top 10 Rankings
October 16, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release
Toronto, Ont. - The Canadian Hockey League today announced the week five edition of the Kia CHL Top-10 Rankings for the 2019-20 season. The weekly rankings of the CHL's Top-10 teams are selected by a panel of National Hockey League scouts.
Rising to third place in this week's rankings are the defending Western Hockey League Champion Prince Albert Raiders, who are now the lone team in the WHL yet to suffer a regulation loss. A 4-2 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes Friday and an 8-4 victory against the Moose Jaw Warriors Saturday pushed the Raiders' record to 7-0-2-0. In those two games, 18-year-old forward Ilya Usau posted six points (3G-3A) to up his production to a point-per game pace through nine contests. Facing the Raiders now is a five-game road trip through the U.S. Division, beginning Saturday, October 19 (7:05 p.m. PT) against the Everett Silvertips.
Also moving up three spots this week were the Edmonton Oil Kings, who moved from ninth to sixth among the CHL's best teams. Earning five of six points from their three games over the past week brought their record to 7-1-3-0, good enough for a share of the lead in the Central Division and Eastern Conference. The Oil Kings suffered a 4-3 overtime loss to the Moose Jaw Warriors last Wednesday, but answered back with a 6-4 win over the Calgary Hitmen and a 2-1 shootout win against the Portland Winterhawks. Overage forward Riley Sawchuk leads the team in scoring with 12 points (5G-7A) through 11 games while 18-year-old Josh Williams and 2020 NHL Draft prospect Jake Neighbours are close behind. Up next for the Oil Kings is a date in central Alberta against the Red Deer Rebels on Friday, October 18 (7:00 p.m. MT).
Rounding out the trio of WHL teams in the Kia CHL Top 10 this week are the Medicine Hat Tigers, who were ranked seventh. The Tigers are tied for the conference lead with the Oil Kings, sporting an 8-2-1-0 record through 11 games. The Tigers' ranking comes on the heels of three solid home victories, including a 5-2 win against the Winnipeg ICE, a 9-1 victory over the Rebels, and a 3-1 decision against the Saskatoon Blades. Topping it off, Tigers' captain James Hamblin was named the WHL On the Run Player of the Week, producing seven points (2G-5A) in the three games. Up next for the Tigers is a date against the Calgary Hitmen on Sunday, October 20 (2:00 p.m. MT).
