Prince Albert Raiders News Release
Regina, SK - The Prince Albert Raiders (8-10-3-1) fell 5-4 in overtime in a back-and-forth game against the Brandon Wheat Kings (17-3-2-0) on Saturday night in the Subway Hub Centre at the Brandt Centre.
Braden Schneider recorded the overtime winner for the Wheat Kings at the midpoint of the extra period.
Eleven different Raiders registered a point on Saturday night, with Matthew Culling, Evan Herman, Landon Kosior, and Dallyn Peekeekoot scoring the Raider goals.
It was also the final game of the season series with the Wheaties. The Raiders picked up three of eight points against their Manitoban foes.
Brandon got the scoring started 3:03 into the contest. Nate Danielson carried the puck down the right wing, setting up a two-on-one rush. He held then sent a backdoor feed to Brett Hyland who tapped it past Paddock to make it a 1-0 game.
The Wheat Kings extended their lead at the 8:27 mark on the power play. Lynden McCallum got the puck in the left corner. He walked the goal line toward the net and slid the puck through Paddock who had to be wary of the cross-crease pass.
The Raiders' best chance of the opening frame came on a power play of their own. Peekeekoot got his stick on a shot, but the redirection hit both posts and stayed out.
Early in the second, Peekeekoot converted on another chance to bring the Raiders back within one. Niall Crocker drove the puck towards the net, but wasn't able to get a shot off. Logan Linklater got the puck behind the net and centered for Peekeekoot who one-timed the puck off the post and in for his fourth of the season, making it 2-1 at the 3:20 mark.
Paddock kept it a one-goal game shortly after. A cross-zone pass found the stick of Nolan Ritchie, but Paddock was able to slide over and rob the Wheat Kings forward with his glove.
Brandon restored its two-goal lead on a power play 7:23 into the middle frame. A quick passing play found the stick of McCallum in the slot. He let a quick shot go that beat Paddock to make it a 3-1 game for the Wheat Kings with his second of the contest.
The Raiders got back within one with a four-on-four goal midway through the second. Justin Nachbaur forced a turnover deep in the Wheat Kings' end as they tried to break out. His shot was stopped, but Kosior came in off the point and snapped the rebound past Kruger for his fourth of the year at the 9:09 mark.
Just 23 seconds into the third period, the Raiders tied things up on the power play. Reece Vitelli sent a pass across the zone to Ozzy Wiesblatt. The San Jose Sharks prospect's one-timer attempt was stopped by Kruger, but Herman was there to clean up the rebound as he potted his team-leading eighth goal of the season.
After Ridly Greig had two quality chances for the Wheat Kings, the Raiders came the other way and took the lead. Gislason worked the puck across the offensive zone to Spencer Moe off the rush. Moe held and found a trailing Culling who made no mistake finding the wide open net at the 8:55 mark of the third for his third of the season, putting the Raiders up 4-3.
The Wheat Kings levelled the score with a power-play goal late in the third. Greig hit Ben McCartney with a backdoor pass and the Arizona Coyotes prospect redirected it past a sprawling Paddock to tie things up at 4-4 with 5:21 to play in the third.
Neither team scored in the final five minutes, sending the game into overtime. In the extra frame, Schneider drove to the outside around a Raider and put a low shot on Paddock that he turned aside with his pad. However, the rebound popped up and Schneider got a second whack at it as he skated in front of the net and beat Paddock to end the game.
Paddock finished the night with 29 saves in the loss. At the other end, Kruger stopped 23 shots for the Wheat Kings.
The Raiders play their penultimate game of the Subway Hub Centre on Monday afternoon when they take on the Winnipeg ICE at 4 p.m. The Raiders will be wearing specialty jerseys presented by Mann-Northway Chevrolet GMC Buick Cadillac in support of Cystic Fibrosis Canada. The auction for the jerseys begins on Monday at Noon CST on 32auctions.
