Wisconsin Rapids Rafters News Release
Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.- The Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (15-27, 3-4) put forth a valiant effort as they tried to rally from an early deficit against the Madison Mallards (24-18, 6-3) but came up short in a 8-4 loss. The defeat snapped the Rafters' season high three game winning streak and was the first win by a road team in the season series between the two regional rivals.
Mallards' starter Christian Taugner (Brown) was dominant in his five innings of work. The righty allowed only one earned run on four hits while striking out eight and not allowing a single walk. Wisconsin Rapids' breakthrough against Taugner came on a solo shot hit by Keelin Rasch (Louisiana Monroe), his second home run in as many days.
On the other side of the diamond, southpaw Jeff Gogue (Cal St. Dominguez Hills) had to pitch in and out of trouble for the Rafters. After escaping a jam in the 1st, Gogue surrendered a two run home run to Alex Bacon (North Florida) in the top of the 2nd. Madison never let go of the lead from that point as they eventually knocked out Gogue after 3.2 innings pitched. Justin Schander (Phoenix College) would come in for Gogue and put forth a yeoman's effort in keeping the Rafters in the game and giving them a chance to come back. Schander went 3.1 inning allowing 4 hits and one earned run.
Wisconsin Rapids would continue to chip away at the lead but 10 runners left on base for the Rafters would spell the end of the winning streak. Madison tacked on insurance runs late in the game and they were able to hold on for their 6th win in the second half. The series between the two teams continues tomorrow night as it is Incourage Community Foundation Rafters Pen Giveaway day. First pitch is slated for 7:05 pm.
