R-Phils Smash Reyes, Aeros Lose Finale 11-3

AKRON, OH - Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Anthony Reyes struggled in his rehab start Sunday, allowing nine runs in 1.2 innings pitched as the Akron Aeros ended a weeklong home stand with an 11-3 loss to the Reading Phillies. The Phillies pounced for eight runs in the top of the second, the most allowed by the Aeros all season in splitting the four-game series in front of 2,616 fans at Canal Park. The loss dropped Akron to 56-50 while Reading jumped back to .500 for the season at 53-53.

Reyes struggled in the top of the first inning as well, allowing a leadoff walk and a stolen base to Michael Spidale. Harold Garcia advanced Spidale to third with an RBI single while Matt Rizzotti followed with a double to right-center to provide for an early 2-0 lead.

The top of the second then witnessed 13 different Reading at-bats and the frame began with three hits and a sacrifice bunt. Each of the next four batters reached base again, including three walks, as Reyes exited the game after forcing a soft liner to third base for the second out. Reliever Chen-Chang Lee entered the game but walked in another run to extend the deficit to 7-0 while a single and an error scored another three runs.

Nick Hagadone replaced Lee out of the bullpen in the fourth and after forcing two quick outs, ran into trouble again. Tuffy Gosewisch doubled to left-center field and Freddy Galvis followed with an RBI single to provide for Reading's final run.

The Aeros offense finally responded to the blowout in the bottom of the fourth inning as third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall cleared the right field bleachers with a leadoff home run. Starting pitcher Michael Cisco then caught fire, retiring the next 12 batters he faced.

Akron scored the final runs in the ninth against Phillies reliever Chance Chapman. Center fielder Jordan Henry and Chisenhall each doubled to cut the margin down to 11-2 and after a walk to Beau Mills, John Drennen recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice.

Cisco (3-7) earned the victory with one of his finest starts of the season, allowing just a single run on three hits in seven innings pitched. Reyes (0-1) failed to survive the second frame in his second Akron outing following June 2009 Tommy John reconstructive right elbow surgery, permitting six hits and four walks to the 15 hitters he faced. The nine runs permitted tied for the most allowed by an Aeros pitcher in 2010 and fortunately, the bullpen provided 7.1 efficient innings with 10 strikeouts against only one earned run.

Henry and Chisenhall provided for four of the only six Akron hits overall on the afternoon, as each extended their hitting streaks with multi-hit performances. Henry finished the home stand with a .571 (12-for-21) batting average and Chisenhall's homer was his 12th.

The Aeros will enjoy an off day Monday before resuming action Tuesday against the first-place Altoona Curve. A doubleheader begins the crucial four-game series, and the two teams will play a pair of seven innings games starting Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Blair County Ballpark. Alex White (6-4, 1.49 ERA) and Paolo Espino (9-4, 4.00 ERA) will throw for Akron against Altoona starters Justin Wilson (8-6, 3.06 ERA) and Jared Hughes (11-7, 4.62 ERA).
