R Five-Game Win Streak Snapped in Reno

July 9, 2022 - Pacific Coast League (PCL)
Tacoma Rainiers News Release

Reno, NV - The Tacoma Rainiers (35-46) had their season-best five-game win streak halted by the Reno Aces (42-40) by a 5-1 final score, but still lead the road series 3-1. Tacoma has won six of their 10 games at Reno this season (8-8 overall).

The Aces broke the seal on a Friday night in the second inning, with two walks, two doubles and a single to take a 3-0 lead. Grayson Greiner (double), Dominic Fletcher (single) and former Rainier Jake Hager (double) had the RBI knocks, and all Reno runs in the frame scored with two out.

Tacoma was on the board in the visiting third, when Jarred Kelenic smashed a 400-foot homer to right-center, his 10th at Triple-A this season. It was Kelenic's second home run in as many nights, his fourth extra-base hit in two games, and he's hit safely in 12 of his last 13 games.

Rainiers RHP Darren McCaughan logged a quality start, with no margin for error following the three earned runs in the second. McCaughan worked six strong innings, scattering only four hits and two walks (3 K), throwing 86 pitches and 62 for strikes. His counterpart matched him with 6.0 IP, as Aces right-hander Corbin Martin walked three but allowed only two hits, and struck out seven. The run against Martin was earned (91 pitches).

McCaughan retired 11 consecutive batters until an error with one out in the sixth, and set down 12 of the final 13 batters he faced.

Still leading 3-1, Reno added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh on Greiner's sixth homer, to center with Jancarlos Cintron aboard after a leadoff double.

The penultimate game of this weeklong series will be on Saturday, a 6:35 PT first pitch at Greater Nevada Field. Southpaw Justus Sheffield will start on the mound for Tacoma, opposite Reno right-hander Ryne Nelson.
